Bullying that he presumably got paid a lot of money for, seeing as how it was part of his televised special

George Carlin was a hero way back in the day when he was told he'd be arrested if he did one of his 'offensive' routines. He did it anyway and was arrested. He fought the legal system and he won. It set a precedent that hey you can't punish people for exercising free speech. It's sad that Canada doesn't extend those similar freedoms to their citizens.

Like really, nobody is forcing anybody to listen to a comedian. Bullying is when you get into somebody's personal space and harass them. A comedian going on stage and telling jokes that the audience expects to be offensive and willingly pays money to go see? That is not bullying. That is a show. That is entertainment. Nobody is forced to go see him perform, so if you are sensitive to certain material, you have the choice to not expose yourself to it.

Just utterly ridiculous.

Here is the actual court case:

http://canlii.ca/t/hq9d9

[18] In his show, Ward talked about [translation] little Jrmy, [translation] the kid with the sub-woofer on his head. He started by saying that he had defended him against people who were [translation] bitching that he [translation] sang badly, saying, [translation] Hes dying, let him live out his dream. But then, noting that, [translation] Five years later...hes still not dead!, Ward said that he ran into him at a [translation] Club Piscine store and [translation] tried to drown him, only to discover that [translation] hes unkillable. He then summed up Jrmys illness by saying, [translation] Hes ugly! The skit ends with the following: [translation] I didnt know how far I could go with that joke. At one point I said to myself, youre going too far, theyre gonna stop laughing. But no, you didnt... ya bunch of....

[19] In three years, the Mike Ward seXpose live show was presented 230 times, with approximately 135,000 tickets sold. The show was videotaped in December of 2012 and could be downloaded from Wards website in 2013. It was later available on DVD, with 7,500 copies produced.

[21] When Jrmys autobiography was launched, Ward made a video featuring Jrmy.[6] He was described as the [translation] ugly singing kid. It was also stated that Jrmys mouth does not shut completely. Ward also insinuated that Jrmys mother used Jrmys money to buy herself luxury goods.

[22] Ward uses Jrmys image in two more videos. In the first, Jrmy sings a bawdy song.[7] The parties were unable to find and adduce the other video featuring Jrmy, but Ward admits that it exists. Jrmy testified that the video contained jokes about the pope and insinuations of pedophilia.

[26] At school, other students repeated the jokes they heard in Wards videos. Jrmy felt ridiculed and sad. He developed suicidal thoughts. He confided in his singing teacher but hid it from his parents. His grades at school dropped, reflecting his emotions.

He took it way too far and made a lot of money doing it, so I'm gonna go with fair next

"NO!"

"WRONG!"

Either way, the act of forcing a person to pay a fine under penalty of violence for making a joke about somebody is a much, much, much more immoral act than the actual act of making that joke. I mean, it's like 1000x worse.

We shouldn't hold him responsible for the actions of school kids. This is just a completely ridiculous way of assessing accountability.

It sounds like kids at school bullied him, not the comedian. It doesn't matter if they are repeating something...a comedian is not responsible for people inappropriately repeating their jokes. If I told an offensive joke at work, I'd be held responsible for it, not the comedian I heard it from.

Totally ridiculous.

Tell me how this kid was bullied. Let's say no kids bullied him at school and nobody judged him and the kid never watched his routine. How can you say that the comedian bullied him?

Because targeted harassment is bullying whether it's in person, online, or said behind their backs.

And what's the negative outcome if the person it's targeted at doesn't ever see it or feel it?

Irrelevant, as that's not the case here.

Actually it is relevant, because as I said earlier, the accountability for bullying should be placed on those that are directly making him feel like shit...in other words, the kids at school and whoever else in his life who are making him listen to hurtful words.

The comedian himself isn't causing those negative situations. He is simply an easy target to single out and try and bring down since he is well known and has money. Like I said earlier, if I told a joke at work that hurt my co-worker's feelings, I would be fired for it.

In other words, it's not the comedian's fault if kids at school are repeating what he's saying so that he has to hear them. He absolutely should not be responsible for that.

I mean, what's next...we have comedians giving money to Bill Cosby for directly making fun of him and hurting his feelings?

Reminder that "free speech" is not a thing in Canada.

But it is.

Lol nah. This topic is proof enough of that. Free speech means people can say shit you don't agree with and sometimes don't think they should be saying. Free speech means the consequences of saying something stupid come from the society you live in, not a fine from your government. Canada (and the UK) factually does not have free speech.

Except they both do.

This topic is literally proof of the opposite. Quit acting obtuse.

Don't be so hard on him. He's obligated to say that.
