Police need to serious learn target identification, like the scene in MIB 1 where J is the only intelligent person actually looking at the situation instead of just going guns blazing in the test scenario.

If you were a cop called to an active shooter situation at the mall and saw a dude with a gun running away, would he not seem like a suspect? Or would you be reasoning like J thinking "Well it's a shooting, and this armed guy is running away, but he's probably just getting his morning cardio".

The racist cops are the ones to blame not guns, the police are suppose to identify a target before firing or even considering firing their gun as they are suppose to keep the public safe, that includes armed citizens aka their allies. The guy was running around holding a gun during an active shooting. You can cry your little eyes out that the most likely consequence of doing that happened, but I don't waste tears over idiots.

I want you to picture yourself as a witness to an active shooting. Cops haven't arrived yet, won't for several minutes. Guy with military experience tactically stops the shooter. In a state where open carry is legal.

Is he still an idiot?

According to him he should have just done nothing and never try to stop him. Open carry is still stupid, but that's completely irrelevant to this story.

I'm more or less attacking the stupidity of calling a trained individual with military experience who tried stopping a vicious criminal an "idiot"

Ehh. I'm not sure why people are trying to make the guy into some hero before we know what actually happened. Reports say some of the witnesses say the guy was involved with the incident somehow. Yeah, he could have been trying to stop the shooter, but he also could have been involved in a less then heroic way. Not everyone in the military is a hero. We really don't know yet.

In open carry Alabama I would yell at him police put the weapon on the ground, identify yourself, most shooters are trying to inflict damage, a guy running with a gun but not shooting means he might NOT be the problem. When the guy does not do as asked or does not say armed citizen/off duty cop/military soldier/ etc and starts aiming to shoot you is when you drop them.

The problem wasn't the mentality in this case. They had every reasonable right to suspect that he was the gunman given such suspicious actions. You can't have all cases be nice and slow and just ask everyone politely to identify themselves and drop everything. Sometimes things have to happen in the heat of the moment, and occasionally accidents will happen. But since you can't have a 100% perfect record, I would much rather take the occasional accident over the letting violent criminals get away who would end up killing even more people.
