Samsungs these days cost just as much as Apple phones do, despite (like Apple) not really having specs or features that justify the price.

You'll get a much better deal even from other major brands, let alone slightly more obscure brands like Xiaomi or Meizu (seriously, check those brands out next time you're after a new phone).

Nice! I currently have a Meizu M3 Note, had it quite a while now. It still works good as new apart from a reduction in battery life - but even now it lasts the whole day easily. My gf has some kind of Xiaomi, I forget exactly which one, but no problems with it either.

I actually considered the Pocophone for if I upgrade, but it doesn't support all the network frequencies used here. There's a handful of Xiaomi phones that do (Redmi Note 5, Redmi S2, Redmi 6A and Mi Mix 2S), as well as the Meizu M6 Note (the newer Meizu 15 doesn't). Of those, only the Mi Mix 2S seems like enough of an upgrade to be worthwhile.

its no surprise to me that apple is in shambles right now. people not buying the xr like they thought, telling suppliers to slow down etc.

people are slowly realizing apple isnt the end all be all of phones. sure 8 years ago if you didnt have an iphone you were a clown, but there are literally like 10 phones now that rival the flagships. they better be glad their branding is so strong. some apple fans you cant even argue with.
