So it appears my laptop is on its last leg and I need a new one. I dont game on here much but I play a lot of skyrim and rocket league, the most modern games I play on xbox. So my question is what do you recommend for a graphics card these days, pretty sure mine is obsolete lol? This laptop has an i7 with a Nvidia GTX 850.

Are you getting a laptop or a desktop?
Give me the budget you have.
Then tell me if you need good (read more than 3 hours of browsing/youtube/etc, NOT gaming) battery life.
Also then tell me if you care about how heavy it is. Most are about 2.5kg/5.5lbs

Were you interested in getting a laptop or a desktop? If you get a mid-range desktop and buy a somewhat mid-range (yet modern) graphics card, you should be able to max both RL and Skyrim, easily.

Oh my bad.
-For sure a laptop.
-Dont care about weight.
-I use it for class as well so I would need it to last a few non-gaming hours.
-Wish to spend 800-900 but willing to go to 1000 if needed. I for sure want an i7 though. I dont think I could go down to an i5 unless there is almost no difference.

Do you know the exact model of your laptop?
I'm assuming America, will Amazon or Newegg do or does it have to be at a store like Bestbuy you can travel to?

This laptop is a MSI GE60 2PL Apache. I have a local best buy which I am gonna go browse at today but want to get a feel for what is the best mid options out there before I go. I like having a little extra power but not too much that I overpay for what I use it for.

done

here's a review of your current laptop:
https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GE60-2PEi781B-Notebook-Review.117056.0.html
And the one I said:
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Nitro-5-7700HQ-GTX-1050-Ti-Laptop-Review.251846.0.html

Now, the reason for those is scroll down to both battery life and temperature - the new one is improved vastly.

I've a laptop with the same processor and weaker GPU (regular 1050 2GB, not the Ti) and it keeps roughly 60FPS at skyrim with some graphics mods at 1080

Wow so many options. Thanks guys :D I think the 1050 will be fine with an i7. Gonna poke in bestbuy to see what they have...and ask if this laptop can somehow be saved for cheap. I will see.

Okay disaster averted. The charger is what was busted. I tested it at the store. But the people at bestbuy said their chargers wont work because of a wattage difference. Is that true? What wattage should a gaming laptop have?

Get an MSI or bust. They're the best price/performance on the market with high build quality.

Thats what I did and it worked but they said they would not recommend them because of low wattage. Highest one that fit my laptop was 65W. Of course the price is absurd lol

Does wattage actually matter tho or is Best Buy brain dead. I bet its the latter

Wattage does matter.
Too low power means your battery won't charge/will drain when using the GPU for gaming

If you have the laptop there in BB, just spin up Skyrim and wait for about 15 minutes. Compare state of battery before and after.
If it improves then great. IF no then yes it matters

Voltage matters. Different voltage than what your laptop normally takes can be very dangerous, potentially even a fire hazard.

Amperage doesn't matter as much, it'll charge faster/slower depending but it doesn't harm anything.

Wattage is V*I, so wattage *does* matter but it's more minute (HEH) than just "lower wattage charge slow"

Re: i7 and graphics card but with a long lasting battery: Good fucking look. You want monstrously powerful components but you don't want those monster components to use as much power as they need. That's not how it works. You can undervolt it I guess but only a tiny tiny bit before you risk BSOD'ing.
