Turn off the water input valve. Unless you're deeply unfortunate in this regard, almost all toilets have a small metal knob under the tank, just near the input point. This allows you to turn off the water flowing into the tank.

Cut the water. Flush the toilet.

The bowl will be completely empty.

And the tank will be 90% empty, easy to sop up the rest with a couple towels.

Does this also get rid of the water in the P-Trap? I'm replacing a toilet.

I remember spending the night at a friend's place. Clogged their toilet in the morning, and I guess the flap didn't close completely after a flush. The water wouldn't stop running, and the bowl was filling quickly. I learned the hard way that their knob didn't work as I would have expected. No matter how much I turned it, nothing would happen.

The clean up was not fun.

Ha. One time I flushed at a friends house for some reason it just kept filling up. I turned the shut off valve for the water and water started spraying out around that knob all over the floor. The panic started to set in.

How did you stop that? When I turned off the shut-off it was pretty tight, so I took the extra step of buying a can of WD40 so that I wouldn't put any unnecessary pressure on it. Precisely because I was afraid of that nightmare scenario happening.

This doesnt help if your problem is a leaky wax ring (will just leak more)

Solution: just use a wet/dry vac
