Yes, they would be much better if they paid their artists to create variable sprites

Ive started to grow fonder of JRPGs but this ish is just lazy and mean to the player imo. Half the reward of finding good loot can be how it makes you look cooler/different.

this stopped being a thing when alternate costumes became the norm back in like the early 2000s.

At least with the 3D Tales games anyway before they figured out they could get more money by making the good majority of them dlc.

Fuck costumes though, granted I still like DQXI with its costumes but it would be much better with accurate aesthetics of your current EQP.

Just imagine trying to explain to people that these magical items afford you better protection than standard clothing.
Or would they implicitly understand because they live in a JRPG?

The problem is when stats and what actually looks good clash.

If a game changes your loom with equipment...transmog needs to be included.

Xenoblade had a terrible problem with ugly ass looking outfits.

No game should ever have stats tied to aesthetics. Definitely have more customization options, but never tie those to stats.

I accidentally voted no but I meant to vote yes. It's one thing I kind of hate about JRPGs now after getting used to it with western RPGs. It's kind of lame equipping a full suit of armor that looks badass in the picture but on-screen your dude is still wearing a tunic from the beginning of the game. I feel like JRPGs still keep it this way cause they know they can just sell costume sets now.

No, aesthetic changes should never be tied to stat changes as well.

I wouldn't say lazy because there's usually a shitload of weapons/armor/accessories and it just winds up being a lot of time to devote to cosmetics

yeah but cant the same be said of western RPGs with a lot of loot/items like Diablo a d Bethesda games

Yup. I hate how DQ11 doesn't show equipment changes outside of a handful of items.

Thankfully they at least have some costumes, I dont recall that being a thing in VIII

fair but i think it can be fun depending. like RuneScape and Fable are 2 games where it works well off the top of my head. and id def rather have it like that than no aesthetic changes at all

With 2D sprites, it's pretty much impossible. A separate sprite needs to be drawn for every combination of gear for every party member, that's completely unreasonable. It's basic combinatorics. Let's say you have 6 characters, there are 20 weapons, 20 helmets, 20 chest pieces, 20 gloves, and 20 boots. Let's say the walk cycle is 4 frames, in 3 directions (left and right can be mirrored as a bit of a shortcut. That is 230,400,000 frames of animation, and that's for a relatively small equipment pool. Most full fledged JRPGs would have the required number of sprites be well into the billions.
