I was wondering this because some people actually think this stereotype is harmless or even beneficial. On the other hand, this stereotype is also why Harvard puts a limit to the number of Asian students it enrolls. The stereotype also extends its way to things like Hollywood movies and the dating scene. Can a positive stereotype be good, or is it still damaging?

My ex is Chinese and she talked about how the "model minority" stereotype is indeed harmful. I don't really remember how specifically, but she was pretty adamant about it.

Lol I wasn't trying to be silly but if it made you laugh then glad I could help!

It's true though; something along the lines of being held to higher standards or something.

I just assumed it's not a matter of being assholes but raising kids in a highly competitive environment so it's sink or swim and you want your children to do well and not go through misery.

It is really because for the longest time people just thought that being good at school=being good at everything else when that wasn't the case but people are still clinging to that mentality.

Well when you keep seeing shit like some Asian guy solving a rubix's cube as he does a backflip....

What.

Tons of feats. Looking up world records and seeing more Asian names than not. Fun martial arts stuff.

Racist people act like it's ALL Asian people who are like that, though. I must admit, though. After seeing so many awesome video and stuff, it's hard not to think "God damn, what CAN'T they do?"

There is a major difference between east asians and south east asians when it comes to income and education level. Because china, japan, and south korea are so powerful and are more likely to study abroad in other countries that this stereotype gets reinforces.

I would assume it refers to Chinese the most, because Japanese tend to stay in Japan

Yeah, sometimes i think asian is too broad of a category. I think the smart stereotype mostly applies to East Asians but at the same time I don't know how well off SEA people are.
