for 20 years I have tried various times to get through BG but never actually finished it. and I mean just the original game, not the whole saga. but I would like to complete it all, this time. from Candlekeep to Throne of Baal's final battle.

I have the enhanced edition and trying to decide what class to be. there are literally 50 in the game (not counting the multi and duel class stuff) so it's hard to decide. but if I just want to plow through the game and complete the story, what would be best? and for someone "new" to the game. in the sense that I think the furthest I ever got was maybe chapter 3 of BG1

If you don't want to look stuff up and minmax then fighter/barbarian
if you intend to stay good then paladin
cleric and druid are great too but because they use spells require a bit more information learning

and since you got to chapter 3: druid be a bear kill things

always preferred warrior tbh.
though in video games they seemed to not be at the front of the pack when it comes to DPS.

Cleric/ranger multi gets stupid powerful pretty quickly

Iirc you get full access to Druid and cleric spells for some reason but still have ranger weapons

I have a lot of experience in these games.

If you want an effective albeit boring character for the first game only, go Fighter, get a couple weapon proficiency points in Longbow and the rest in Longsword and just wear heavy armor and use a shield for up close fighting and you'll dominate the game.

If you want a really great character at all levels of the game, and can go all the way through the trilogy, my suggestion is a Multiclass Fighter / Cleric.

Most of the advantages of a fighter, heavy armor, and access to divine spell casting which you can basically just stack in the form of buffs.

Not in the enhanced edition games, but you can fix that easy enough.

It was always an oversight that Cleric/Rangers got Druid spells

Cavalier is great in the first one. With its fear/poison immunity.

Mages are always fantastic, but need lots of coddling at the start of the game.

Fighters are nice and simple. Can go for multiclass with thief or cleric for a bit of extra fanciness as well if wanted.

To add to this, go Dwarf or Half-orc.

I restarted this game so many times, and never made it to Baldurs Gate :(

Granted, I was pretty young at the time.

Strongest class bar none is sorcerer.

Most newbie friendly class is berserker, which is also part of the top 5 strongest when dual classed to cleric.

Elven Archer (Ranger kit.) A good bow user will rampage through BG1. The Inquisitor kit for Paladin is also a strong choice, you don't get the Cleric spells in BG1 anyway, and being able to shut down any magic shenanigans with one ability is powerful throughout both games
