I always liked physical guides, they were helpful when I was playing Ocarina of Time as a kid and they looked nice on a shelf.

But dammit they were expensive and you can get the info they provide on the internet for free.

I had considered it as a possible career option way back, but even then I knew that given the fact that my guides on GFAQs were free, easily accessible, and easily updateable, I knew back then that business model was doomed to failure.

You know, as detailed as your guides are, I've always wondered how much longer you had to spend with a game than other people and how often you descended into frustration when trying to be as complete as possible. For some reason Ogre Battle 64 comes to mind.

Ha, I barely remember the process from putting that guide together. Was waay back in the college days.

Would you believe that I actually went back to that guide as recently as 2017? Since it came out on the Wii U Virtual Console, part of me wanted to give the game, and the guide, another go-round, maybe improve on it.

It's a surprisingly strange and recent phenomenon to try and search the internet for answers to questions I have about older RPG titles, only to then to find the answer in a post I made in 2008.

With regards to Prima, it's unfortunate for those who will have lost their jobs, but this is the future going forward with the Internet. I'm actually surprised that it took so long for this inevitability. GameFAQs and wiki pages have been a thing for a long time now, and when people need quick information on something very specific or obscure, that's where they go. If they want something more generally consumable, they either search a text walkthrough or find a youtube video. Printed media is important and still has its place as a medium of record, but this just isn't an area where it can reasonably compete with more modern methods.

I remember getting the Skyward Sword guide because I used to love getting the guides since they were so nice and stuff. Sure, I could have looked up info I needed, but it was a nice item for collection. I caught a few errors in it though.

Holy crap, I did the same thing! I got stuck on a game a few years ago, and found an old FAQ I made as a kid that helped me out. It was so surreal.

Man fuck Prima. Any of you guys get the (dis)pleasure of dealing with their Legend of Dragoon guide? Typos, incorrect HP values, misplaced screenshots, the works. It read like a guy who played through the game for the first time.

Not a big loss. Their guides were inaccurate anyway. I remember owning one for Body Harvest.

Their Kirby 64 guide was rushed as well.

I mean....it makes sense.

Strategy guides are pretty damn pointless now that we have video walkthroughs and video gaming websites available for free.

They really needed to adapt with modern times.
