They're kinda the same reason, but from different angles.

One is neither candidate cares or campaigns on the issues that you care about, or doesn't have a stance on your chosen issue, or doesn't plan on doing anything about it. If nothing you care about is an issue to either candidate, then why would it matter who gets elected? You'd be equally unhappy with both.

The other one would be, you agree with half the stuff from one candidate, and the other half of the stuff from another candidate, and neither group of issues are more important in your head than the other, so they're both equally appealing. You would legit be just as happy with either one winning.

People have a tendency to say "well you can at least vote for the lesser evil, you don't have to like them!" But what if to a person there is no lesser evil? What if they're perfectly either undesirable or perfectly desirable?

If you can't parse the candidates into the classic, "lesser of 2 evils" you're just too uninformed.

And if you refuse to make that call, you're a whiny, petulant child and I hope they purge you off the rolls next time.

You can definitely complain at the lack of candidate options. If neither one represents what you want, then why wouldn't you be able to complain?

That just sounds like a post from the point of view of a very partisan person. Like if you're a liberal you'd say someone is uninformed if they vote for Ted Cruz, and if you're a conservative then you'd say someone is uninformed if you vote for Beta.

But I never said anything about being unable to tell the difference between the candidates. I'm saying the differences may be something you don't care about, or they may equally represent what you want to happen. You'd be informed about them, and still not hold one over the other.

Like I could be super informed about pan pizza and thin crust pizza, but at the end of the day I just can't say which one I like more, because I like them both equally.

How? It shows to me that you're not serious enough about issues that you're passionate about. Why should I engage in a debate with someone who isn't passionate enough to go out and support their cause?

No it's not. Voting is mindless and takes no real effort. The people that get said issues into the system to be voted on? They actually do something. You only care once every x number of years and convince yourself you "did something".

These days parties matter more. Even if you don't care about issues you're still going to want to have your party's person in the seat when the controversial votes come in. Or, as we've seen with Trump, if it's a presidential election, there's more at stake such as Supreme Court appointments.

The other one would be, you agree with half the stuff from one candidate, and the other half of the stuff from another candidate, and neither group of issues are more important in your head than the other, so they're both equally appealing. I can't imagine anyone is that split on every single issue, prop, measure, and candidate on the ballot. You could just skip the races you don't care on, but there has to be something else on the ballot you have an opinion about.

Why should you vote for people you hate and that don't line up with your values? Is there really a functional difference between abstaining and writing in a vote. Your decision is not having any effect either way. I don't know if it's fair to blame people for not making lesser of two evil decisions when there is no gun to their head and it's not life and death.

I get advocating that people show up because there are typically multiple items on a ballot, but shaming people for not participating in a specific election is silly

There is. If you have the option to make it slightly less worse for yourself and you don't, you gotta eat that. If all the choices are all differing flavors of bad, do yourself a favor and choose the least awful one.

Voting isn't a gift. It's a right. The candidates aren't doing me a favor by being on the ballot. You owe them nothing. Urging people to vote for the least bad is a statement against the state of America. You can't demand people make that choice. I could never blame someone for being offered six flavors of diarrhea ice cream and deciding to skip dessert this time. Maybe they'll stay if at least vanilla is on the menu.

Your colorful anecdote doesn't quite work though, because unlike simply abstaining from eating the shitty ice cream, doubtless the best option there, someone is going to win these election races and they're going to use their offices to enact their politics into policies, which will affect you and possibly me and the rest of us depending upon the office.

To use your figurative language, you're going to get force-fed shit here no matter what you do. And from my 30+ years, I know that not all shit-filled ice cream is created equal. Rather than abstaining, letting other people decide for you, and then bitching about the experience later, I think you'd be better off choosing the least awful bowl of shitty ice cream, insofar as it's within your power to do so. And then stay politically active during primaries to improve the quality of your options going forward.

The candidates on your ballot are not 'equally bad.' You will agree with one of them more than you agree with the other. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
