Not only is he an unapologetically racist, sexist, homophobic fascist, but he plans to open up the Amazon rainforest to corporations as well as remove the protections on the indigenous inhabitants. He believes that climate change is hogwash, and if this goes through (which it will, sadly), then it's safe to say that the world is fucked.

What a disgrace.

Why did people vote for him then?

Because of the corruption and failure of the left leaning government that came before him.

However, and I know you may be shocked to hear this, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Just a heads up, the Amazon rainforest is already open to corporations.
The United States government incentivized companies to purchase tree farms to offset waste production.
As a result, all trees in the Amazon are tagged by a corporation that goes towards their tax break. It's been a controversy for years because locals lost their business because American companies owned all the trees.

Now there is a blackmarket for wood in Brazil and the locals sneak in and chop them down anyway.

All I heard from his campaign is that he would quell all the violence and murders.

That cant be any worse than how that country is now.

Well that's because you are of the ilk to willingly shove your head into the sand and pretend what you don't want to be true isn't true.

Thankfully that's not how reality works.

you mean to say that the illegitimate right-wing coup government that ran the country since ousting Dilma Rousseff in 2016 was left leaning? because that's incorrect

Not at all, and I'm not an expert on Brazilian politics, just that Rousseff's policies and corruption issues likely pushed a lot of the country to the right.

he was ousted 2 years ago in a coup, and an illegitimate government had been ruling in his stead

Why did people vote for him then?

To prevent the presidential candidate for the left-wing party from being elected. There was a survey that indicated up to 30% of voters changed their votes to Bolsonaro so that hed be in the runoffs with Haddad.
Basically, Bolsonaro could only win against Haddad and Haddad would most likely win against anyone else, so this happened.

We had 12 choices and after very careful and thoughtful deliberation, picked the worst 2 out of them all. Obrigado, Obama.

I doubt he's that bad, this sounds like more of the usual fear mongering from the left. As usual, they call anyone who disagrees with them a racist/fascist/homophobe/etc.

"Had a very good conversation with the newly elected President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who won his race by a substantial margin. We agreed that Brazil and the United States will work closely together on Trade, Military and everything else! Excellent call, wished him congrats!"

I'm not worried. If Trump approves of him then that's good enough for me.
