At college we played it all the time, the local bar often had guitar hero and later rock band contests. Could confidently play anything on hard on the guitar, most stuff on the drums. Little on expert without actually practicing over and over!

I could never get down a good alternating up/down motion when the notes were super close together, so I always sucked at those songs.

I could do all but the very hardest songs on expert, generally well, but occasionally having to flail my way through some tough segments.

Would be sorta fun to go back and play those games again, but I don't see it happening.

At my best I was exclusively Expert on Guitar and Bass. I could FC some of the easier songs and I somehow FC'd Crosstown Traffic (hardest song I've been able to FC so far). However some of the higher difficulty songs still give me a lot of trouble. But anything 5 dot or lower in RB I can manage pretty well.

This basically.

On Clone Hero I'm playing any song I choose to play on Expert and - unless it's obscenely hard like a lot of the DragonForce discography - I'm usually 90+% accuracy, and I can FC some of the moderately-difficult songs if I put in a little grinding.

I actually played Free Bird (from GH2) the first time tonight and got 94%. I heard it was pretty hard, and it seemed like it but I was on a hot streak, so I'm proud of myself.

I just couldnt do that fifth button, so hard mode was beyond me.

What I at least started out doing was basically having my "default" hand position be with my index finger on the red fret, and shifting my hand one fret up if a green ever came up.

Playing some songs can be a bit more nuanced than that but it's a good starting point.

IIRC Warriors of Rock had a tutorial teaching you how to do it ... which how I learned in the first place. >_>

Same tbh. Maybe if I practiced that more I'd be more proficient but I mainly just end up wailing on the strum bar.

honestly the best way to tackle them is to just try to get a feel for the rhythm and length of the notes.

The thing I always sucked at were the descending notes in solos. stuff like G R Y B repeated. Always found the opposite a lot easier.

Strangely, I'm the other way around. But then I play the frets with my right hand (despite not inverting the notes on-screen).

I felt like I could do it more reliably on a difficulty like Hard where the speed wasn't as fast. Any time I tried to get a rhythm going, I'd either overstrum or I wouldn't go fast enough and just flat miss the notes.

There were certain combinations that would really fuck me up, too. Like when you had to quickly hit R G O at the same time, my fingers seemed to have trouble stretching like that.

I feel like I played kind of unconventionally. I always strummed down when playing normally, which people told me is something that bass players tend to do more. I don't play any instruments in real life, so I didn't know any difference.

Guitar Hero is the video game equivalent of My Little Pony. Playing with one of those baby toys that makes sounds when buttons are pressed would be more dignified. Picturing an adolescent, or worse an adult, playing that game alone is like picturing them sucking a pacifier while shaking a rattle. Though a rattle is kind of an instrument so playing guitar hero is even sadder.

dignified? get over yourself guy. It was fun to play with friends no matter what age you were.

Anyways, I mostly played GH3. I was pretty decent. FC'd well over half the setlist, 5* on all songs including DLC.

I miss GH/RB when they were in their heyday. They really were the funnest party games.
