Rocky Top Middle School in Denver, Colorado has outraged parents after they did not give warning ot them that a DRAG QUEEN would be among the invited guests to speak to students as part of CAREER DAY!!

The drag queen named "Jessica L'Whor" was among who spoke to 12 year olds at a career and literacy event and introduced herself as "Ms Jessica" as the dancer and performer spoke to students on her career and bullying.

She also read a children's book titled "Horrible Harry" that focused on bullyig and spoke about the damage it does to people

She said the message resonated with students and said "I had a couple kids that were like, i'm gay in school and i get bullied every week and i don't know about what to do and just talking to you helped me realized that i can still be me and still be happy. I got message being like, thank you so much for coming to my class, i was having a really horrible week and you made my day"

She was invited to speak by a student who is their relative.

But conservative parents none to happy about this as the school ISN'T apologizing for it other than they apologize for not warning them about her being there. They were not happy that a "man dressed as a woman" was speaking to their kids and did not want that kind of "lifestyle" forced upon their kids.

Principal Chelsea Behanna sent a letter to parents after the outrage who said that Ms Jessica was a drag queen who explained she was a performer even though she was a man but she portrays a woman for her performances and that students were engaged with her talk and asked great questions"

Do you have a problem with this?

I have no problem with this, Jessica gave a great message that resonated with some of the kids who definitely needed to hear that. Only insane backwards individuals who can't see past the person's appearance have a problem with this.

I think parents need to get over it, good god its 2018

I personally have a bit of a problem with drag itself in the sense that it can make trans people look like (well, to cis people who dont really think much of these issues) theyre just playing dress up (like drag queens) and not seriously the gender they identify as.
That being said, I think that drag makeup and whatnot is really fun and interesting, just that it deserves a bit more conversation than it receives.

Not that thats even why parents are butthurt but yknow.

No its not. It is performance art that was initially used as a form of political speech. A man dressing in an exaggeratedly feminine fashion was seen as spitting in the face of social norms. At no point in history has it ever been a fetish.

I don't have a problem with it outside of the fact that every drag queen I've known has done nothing but talk about how much of a struggle it is as a full on career.

So as long as they weren't being mislead about the prospects of it it's whatever.

Cbf looking too closely, but were they overly sexual about it? If so, I can see the problem, and that'd be a problem regardless of gender presentation. If not, what's the fucking problem?

What exactly is inappropriate about it?

It's not like they are a stripper or anything overtly sexual. And if it helps people struggling with their own identity, then even more reason to encourage it.

A drag person is exactly that - a persona. What follows from that as far as working that into a career or whatever is up to the individual. Lots of performing and public speaking, hosting shows and such.

And yeah, some of that is overtly sexual. But that's a chunk of the group, not the whole thing.

People don't mind when assets of the state like the police or military members show up to career day, compared to that the worst a drag queen might do is... Do sexy things in front of a willing adult audience, the sort of thing they'd make sure to avoid discussing instead of being praised for?

I agree with the parents 100%.

Are you offended by career days in general as those big bad adults might influence the future of those children? Or are you just grossed out by a guy in a dress and fear that they have powers of influence that the typical adult does not?

People clutching their pearls only ever care about Da Children being influenced in ways they don't like. They absolutely want to teach them young in the ways they desire to mold them.

Even if the message was positive, and resonated with some of the students, people would still complain about it just for the fact that religion was some how involved. A children's book that happened to be loosely related to a religious story. Something basically boiling down to do unto others, which could be easily be anti-bully. People would still complain.

If people don't agree with it, they will complain. The people who agree with the complainers will see the complaints as super justified.
