He started losing his balance and movement coordination. He can't walk anymore now. He's also been losing his memory and his speech is slurred.

In the winter the doctor in a private clinic said he has Parkinson's disease.

Now he is hospitalized and at the hospital we are told that he has something called "normal pressure hydrocephalus." I googled it and it seems to be something rare and often misdiagnosed.

Oh welp. I suppose we're going to have to change meds now or something I guess.

Having someone in your family misdiagnosed feels kind of weird. Like, should I trust the hospital more than the clinic doctor?

What do?

My dad was misdiagnosed last weekend in the ER and was given blood thinners despite the fact that he was bleeding internally. He almost died, but thankfully someone realized it and he had emergency surgery to drain the blood from around his heart

trust the medical community implicitly.

but never be shy to seek a second opinion.

My father was told he had a huge aneurysm ready to explode a few weeks ago. Did a high contrast cat scan and was told "yeah there's no fucking aneurysm here. Just some calcium."

Doctors arent infallible and diagnoses and treatment paths are educated guesses. A third opinion wouldnt be unwarranted. Im guessing theres a specialist for this sort of category

i almost want to ask if you have a primary care set up for him.

"yeah there's no fucking aneurysm here. Just some calcium."

maybe he saw a worst-case scenario and acted on the possibility. i can't imagine he was angry to be proven wrong.

He was really happy about the news but for a few days I was really worried he was going to just suddenly die.

Makes me wonder if there was a miscommunication of I think you may have an aneurysm, lets get a contrast CT head. I cant tell you how many times Ive counseled patients and had to throw in I cant rule out cancer now but lets get some imaging and they lost it convinced that they had cancer, stopped listening to the remainder of the counseling.

I can sympathise as a lawyer... some people expect us to be perfect which is not realistic. But if i make a mistake someone can lose money or lose a contract or something. The consequences arent the same for doctors

You think that's bad (and it is, don't get me wrong), imagine being the one misdiagnosed. Over and over. For years. Because it's never lupus.
