Im playing through the second one and its so weird to be reading message board posts in a video game lol. The whole interface of the game is neat.

The people in the game take it seriously to such an absurd degree that it's hilarious. When supernatural stuff happens, I get that but otherwise they need to all chill out.

Why'd this series die?

.hack//LINK was intended to be the end of the series which was a handheld game on the PSP and never left Japan. Then they released that .hack// movie and a fighting game which brought back some interest to the series. They decided to release the HD collection to gauge interest in the series and I believe they hinted there may be something new in the works.

Was that compilation that came out this (last?) year any good?

It's decent but they made the game even easier than it already was. They upped the amount of damage you do and the amount of xp you get which overlevels you like crazy and completely trivializes everything. As someone that loves the .hack// series, it bugs the hell out of me and I just quit playing them and instead replayed them on PS2. Vol. 4 was a nice wrap up of the G.U. saga though.

Yeah, that sounds like a deal-breaker. Better remember not to get 'er when Black Friday rolls around.

If you can get it for dirt cheap I at least recommend getting it to play through Vol. 4. Haseo's new form is fun to use and they did add Japanese voices. They messed up something with the voices on the English version if I remember right. I don't remember what they changed but something about them sounds really bad. I think it's the battle grunts.

yeah, not at all unless you grind and overlelvel purposely.

what they did was make it so you didnt HAVE to grind via that awesome yet insanely repetitive battle system, which only becomes more so if you play the games in quick succession.

play em for the story anyway; it's a fun ride

You never had to grind in the PS2 version lol. If you cleared the areas the games give you through the story which you should do to get an S rank for area words you stay nicely leveled for the entire story on PS2. On the HD remasters if you do that you WILL overlevel.

And yes it did make the game trivial. There were only 3 "hard" fights in GU which were the final bosses for Vol 1 and 2 and the midboss of Vol 3. The HD remaster they're not worth jackshit because you do so much damage now.
