This is confusing to me.

I don't grow anything, not being a farmer. If I move to America, can I have $$$, please?

This is when rich malefactors want to jack the market price by paying off the farmers to not grow anything.

I kinda thought this was common knowledge. Guess I was wrong.

In an effort to prevent certain crops from having price drops and overproduction some US Farmers are in fact paid not to grow anything.

Because it's our priority to make sure prices are not too low, and that things become more affordable.

How did those manufacturers become rich with such a poor grasp of microeconomics?

It's not just that. People are paid to not farm harmful (but legal) things, like tobacco. Prevents teens from begin addicted as easily, and stop people in general from dying. What is a good thing.

This famously happened in the EU too with the CAP. Farmers subsidised to not produce so that we didn't have stock mountains growing everywhere.

Difficult problem to resolve. Either let the farmers die out or pay them to sit on their butts.

Perhaps it's to maintain the capacity to produce more than we currently need, just in case it becomes necessary to do so

I think it's a lot to do with farmers not having the ability to scale things down when the market is down. A field/livestock isn't exactly something you can put into storage and stop staffing just because people aren't buying as much milk this year for some reason. Also there's massive economic implications with losing that kind of industry.

I mean these are just some armchair quarterback thoughts, I'm sure it's all very complicated

We have the problem of too many poor people, and farmers not doing anything aren't farmers, they're people just getting paid off so a crop sold in billionaire-owned supermarkets sells for a higher value.

Now if Miami froze over and most of the orange crop was lost, oranges that year would be high.

I'm no economist, but one would think if the price of gas went down, for example, so would everything else. I knew when the price of gas went down, nothing else was going to go down.

I was definitely right. The price of transported goods, of course, went higher.

It's advanced agricultural and economic practices like this that keep prices stable and have made America one of the top food producing nations there is.

Not all solutions are intuitive and sometimes the optics of stuff like this can seem bad but this is actually a really good practice.
