They're either really bitter or really nice. In my retail days, the worst were middle aged people. They're bitter enough to be pricks and still have enough energy to really start shit over the littlest things. I imagine now it's worse with older folks since it's the boomers who are the old ones now.

Cause they don't gaf. They know what they want and what they expect and they don't mind making people wait till they get it. Especially since they got less time than most people anyways.

But, with rising housing prices, diminishing social security, and kids choosing fortnite over playing - they never get to let out those satisfying, guttural screams at the kids...Maybe it's their yearning to return to their now lost youth.

So they get mad about everything else instead.

Oh god yeah I think you're right.

A few weeks ago we had a middle aged woman come in. She got a text alert saying she had a prescription ready at the other store in town (not our's). We tell her we don't have anything. She claims she got a text from us (she didn't). We pull up her text history on our computer and it shows we never sent her an alert. We tell her it's at the other store. She gets mad. We tell her we can transfer but it might take time and it would probably be faster to just drive to the other store (it's like 10 minutes away). She says no to that and demands that we call the other store and have one of their employees drive it over to her. We tell her that's not happening. She then demands that the pharmacist call the district pharmacy manager and so she can talk to him. She demands he come to the store. A little over 20 minutes later he arrives. She still claims we sent her a text. After she goes back and forth with him for what feels like an eternity she finally agrees to do a transfer.

If she had done that from the start she would have saved herself a lot of time.

Also, when she was still insisting that we texted her I asked if she could show me the text she received on her phone and she conveniently didn't have it on her. That was definitely a lie.

I think the main reason is that customer service has changed drammatically in the last 70 or so years.

Like, go watch the Twilight Zone or something. The customer walks into the soda shop, the proprieter greets them with a smile, starts chatting them up, etc, sits there and talks with them while they drink their drink, etc.

I think part of it is that the whole "customer is always right" mentality is slowly being phased out as more and more people are realizing how bullshit it is.

This cannot happen quickly enough

If you're going to be a dick to whoever is offering you a service, there's a pretty decent chance that no matter how nice that person treats you, it's a huge waste of time. Time is money, and sending you out the door is a wise business proposition no matter how much you badmouth that business to your (probably) low-quality friends.

They're jaded from life and simply don't give a fuck anymore. We'll all be there one day.

I learned a long time ago that some people just have misery hardwired into their DNA. You can treat them like the second coming of Christ and they'll still be dissatisfied.

And if every business told them to fuck off instead of bending over backwards for them, they might become good instead of continuing to be shitheads and walk over anyone who offers them so much as an inch to do so.

If you enter into my house and act like a dick, you will find yourself out the door in short order, so I don't see how coming into someone's place of business is so different. There's an abundance of good quality customers who pay good money who aren't assholes, so someone who IS a dick will not be missed.

Never had a problem with old people. I find middle aged women to be far worse.

My favourite is when they come in to return something that they cant return and then when theyre told no they bring their husband in to try and intimidate the staff. Fucking embarrassing.

One of the few areas in their lives where they can still feel a modicum of control is when they're in the role of being an active consumer.

But like other people said, they're ultimately usually not gonna be as much of a problem as determined middle aged problematic customers, who can be way more of an issue for you if they wanna be on average.

If you treat yourself right there's nothing wrong with being old. And with medical advances people of this generation will probably regularly live to be 100+
