...you're GIVEN everything needed to explore from the start instead of needing to find it?

Sort of. Often you don't even *need* any abilities (beyond normal movement) to explore.

Another difference is that open world games have almost entirely seamless worlds (minus indoor areas). Metroidvanias have many interconnected rooms with transitions between them.

Not really. Sometimes the game will wall you off from sections if you haven't done the right missions yet. In Metroidvanias, you can get anywhere, provided you have the ability to.

Not really. Sequence breaking is a big thing in Metroidvania. You can't sequence break an open world game that walls off areas based on story. You can in Metroidvanias.

Open-World games are indeed just Metroidvanias except you have all the abilities to explore everywhere from the start.

Come to think of it, they're also racing games except there aren't any opponents trying to get somewhere before you.

And hey, they're also fighters except you're not trying to beat up a single opponent.

Mmm, there are similarities, but Metroidvanias tend to still have a fairly set linear objective that you are working towards whereas a lot of open world games give the player a lot more choice as to what they want to pursue.
