Tomato paste
Whole peeled tomatoes (crushed and such)
Red wine
Herbs of choice
Slow simmer to reduce and thicken

I'm sure there's some nuance there that I'm missing, but that's tye baseline

I usually dice the onion instead of halving it though.

Fresh tomatoes
Cut into quarters

2 is enough for yourself, 4 if you're cooking for a family.

Lots of extra light olive oil

Brown garlic in oil first.

Salt, basil, oregano

That's all.

If you don't want to use fresh tomatoes, buy a can of peeled whole tomatoes and just pour the whole thing directly into the pot. Cut the tomatoes after you put them in the pot.

Edit: don't use tomato paste wtf

Here's the recipe I've come up with over the years.

tl;Dr version
-Saute chopped onions and garlic in some olive oil in a pot until they're golden yellow.
-Add in like a can of crushed tomatoes.
-Season with basil, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, onion powder, etc
-Cover and let simmer for like 20 minutes

I mean if you're just making it to throw on some pasta or pizza, 20 min is fine. If you're entering it in a contest or really looking to impress didn't, then yeah you could simmer it for like an hour to really let it stew, but for everyday use it's not necessary.

I concur. Trash cans are bigger than pots. You can have more spaghet and red sauce if you have it out of the trash then you would a pot

This except let simmer for 2-3 hours on low heat. Be heavy handed with the garlic.
