first watch i ever bought.

I liked it but I probably wouldnt buy it again, though this was in like 2013 so maybe they stepped their game up IDK. Just felt like a solid watch but the chronograph hands needed calibrated frequently(not a big deal but also not something i should need to do often). kept decent time as I recall.

I just wouldnt spend a lot of money on one. A lot of websites make you feel like youre getting a mega deal....MSRP $650 but you can have one for 175...okay. theres nowhere anywhere selling an invicta for 650. thats a little shady right there, though itv is common on the watch world.

I cant remember probably 125-150.

I own one automatic. Now, if youre going for an automatic you dont want a cheap one. too many things can go wrong. I dont know too much about them. The auto I have is actually broken right now, though I have heard despite my issues they are solidly built watches at a very nice price:

Vostok:

A lot of diving-esque watches from them. They are russian and I mean actual russian, I point that out because finding info about them can be hard to do sometimes but they have a lot of fans.

Perhaps you could see if its cheaper to buy one thats used and doesnt work but find a reputable watch repair place to fix it.

that might be a cheap way to get something good.

I'm honestly not too familiar with them, so i cant say. but it just feels to me, with so many tiny moving parts, you shouldnt cheap out on it.

Imagine spending $500 in excess for something that you'll only need like 3 seconds to fix every now and then.

Depends on what you think is good enough. Take into consideration, mechanical or other, there is no perfect timepiece. Even some of the finest certified chronometers from people like Rolex will lose or gain time. I have a few cheap automatics (<$100) that are all good enough for me, but I also don't require accuracy to a millisecond at any given moment.

what kind of automatics do you have? The cheap automatics i got weren't very accurate and they didn't last very long either.

Various branding, Akribos XXIV, BINSSAW, IK Colouring, but they're basically all inexpensive Chinese movements. Of course, the cheaper you go the more of a gamble it is, but I've been happy with what I have.

If you'd prefer not to take those chances, and can find a style you like, Seiko and Orient both make highly regarded autos that can be had for about $100-150. Sometimes a bit cheaper if you catch a sale.

Some Bulovas are great. From what I understand they're sort of like Invicta, once an esteemed watchmaker that I guess kind of "sold out" in the eyes of watch connoisseurs. I don't know that I'd just get one on a whim, but I wouldn't dismiss it if I liked it and people more familiar had favorable opinions.

I doubt I'd qualify as a huge watch guy, but I do have a small collection I like.

A bit, but not nearly enough to give any worthy insight like common problems with a particular model. They are ridiculously complex and while the fix may wind up being simple, the diagnosis almost certainly wouldn't be.
