What sets off your anxiety? Do you practice breathing?

My family is acting crazy and I just had a 60 hour work week without a day off and I dont know what I can do tonight to relax so its all adding up into an anxiety attack. And no, breathing exercises never helped me much.

Music usually helps too. Preferably something you know the majority of the lyrics to. Otherwise it sounds like you need a major life change if you're gonna avoid anxiety. If you work 60 hours a week why don't you get a place away from your family? Unless you mean wife and kids.

Eh, my family gave me plenty of anxiety even when I wasnt living with them. My mom likes to pretend shes helpful when shes actually just fucking with everyone but my dad is retired and weve become super close since I moved back in so usually its a good trade off. Right now I dont drive (my eyes get fucked up at night as a side effect of my last concussion) so Im not in a spot to be completely independent right now.

I dont usually work this much without time off but its busy season for the music venue/nightclub I work at so Ive been picking up more nights than normal. That place generally takes my stress away, but the hours can get brutal without a day off to catch up on sleep.

Ive also usually got a couple buddies who I can go chill with on days like today when I need something to look forward to after work, just bad timing that no one is around tonight.

But at least I can walk away from my job to type this shit out right now.

I feel you there. Sometimes I really need a friend to help distract me but I don't like coming off needy so I don't guilt anyone ever.

It sounds like the extra shifts aren't a good trade off for how much it spikes your anxiety. You should probably factor that in when they have other options.

Usually I get Mondays off, just had to schedule around a vacation this week so it threw that off.

Just sort of the perfect storm of shit today.

Just think about that then. How this situation giving you anxiety is just a temporary thing. You're gonna be calmed down and this will be in the past before you know it.

Distraction, exercise, not necessarily breathing exercises, but making sure your respirations are consistent so you don't experience any hypoxia. All are non-medicinal ways to avert an attack.

It's even worse if you work with kids. In some situations, you can't even step out to calm down, since you can't leave them unsupervised. Knowing you're stuck there while they continue to badger you during an anxiety attack is hell.

I get them too, and breathing never works for me.

The only thing that works for me is basically shutting my eyes, holding my head and hoping it goes away, that or Xanex.

I find myself probably taking them when I shouldn't, but I am in constant fear of having a panic attack.

I had one on an airplane, with 4+ hours to go before we landed and it was the worst experience of my life.

My doctor gave me Lorazepam (Ativan) to deal with anxiety at work. It made me more tired than anything and made me just not give a shit about what I was doing.

Kind of relied on it while I was finishing out my two weeks at my last job, but it was easy to transition off it after than that and I didn't feel tempted to take more than the two prescribed. Maybe it's a safer/milder alternative to Xanax?

Nah. Ativan is stronger than Xanax.

Huh, didn't know that. They are only .5 mg though and I've never had more than two in a day. Can't really see what would be the draw in overdoing them and I definitely don't see how they'd allow someone the energy to ride a bike around town.

I feel like its some kind of defense mechanism but I only really feel anxiety when I'm by myself or around people I know very well. When I'm around strangers or coworkers that are not my bros I basically become stoic and feel nothing in regards to fear or doubt.

Ativan has a half-life of about an hour, and is typically used to avert a panic attack. If you have long-term anxiety or GAD, it's better to use a longer lasting medication like Klonopin or Valium.
