I also remembered a connection between this season and Asylum, though it's not a direct one. The mutated cannibals we've seen hints of (and outright in Cordelia's vision) are extremely similar to the Raspers Dr. Arden created in Asylum. Interestingly, he created them in hopes of creating a new breed of human that would survive nuclear war.
