He suffers from severe anxiety that has led him to become malnourished because he believes if he tries to eat real food he will choke to death. >_< the situation really sucks and it feels like I'm losing the person I have been hanging out with daily for over 2 years.

That's terrible.

Has only one tried to offer to eat every meal with him?

His wife does, but he still won't eat much more than crackers. He has lost around 40lbs in the past 6 months and he didn't weigh very much to begin with.

Crackers?! That's a weird thing to eat when you're fixated on a fear of choking.

She should remind him that choking on liquids is uncommon and suggest some vegetable broth and watery oatmeal. He needs protein so hummus, super smooth, is a good idea.

I'm trying to think of foods that won't feel like it will get stuck. Crackers are the exact opposite of that. Ask him to put some hummus or other smooth nutrient dip on it.

Dude, it literally makes no sense. I think he just has some kind of panic disorder but is choosing to focus on trying to treat a physical illness rather than a mental one. He's also rather stubborn and pretty much shoots down any suggestions that don't come from a doctor- yet refuses to talk to a shrink or counselor.
