It's both a love letter to the history of comic books across the golden and silver age, and a critique of the inherent objectivist fantasy of the superheroes. It bombards you with a wall of disparate details as arcane as the mask killer plot Rorschach is imagines he's unraveling, only to come together remarkably neatly in the end. This and Maus kind of paved the way for comic books and graphic novels to be treated as serious literary fiction by the western literary canon. Historically and culturally it's quite important to the development of mass entertainment media in the closing twenty years of the twentieth century, even if it was also the direct inspiration for the comic book dreck of the nineties. I actually really dislike the movie. It's visually faithful to the action of the book, but spiritually seems to miss much of sarcasm and ambiguity Moore inserted into novel to reach an almost opposite conclusion.
