A lot of the time they use it to get a percentage of people playing the game. If 97% people have pressed play (because you'll never get 100% of people to get any trophy/achievement in a game) you can see what percentage got to what point in the game.

Achievements in general annoy me. I had them as a kid by setting my own goals and it didn't result in an annoying popup.
