It seemed like they all had laugh tracks in the 90s and prior, but MitM was the first I can remember without one.

Going by this list it looks like Dinosaurs was, but Malcolm still looks to be pretty early.

Actually, technically might be The Simpsons.

Remember when the "audience" used to go WOOOOOOOOO when 2 characters kissed? Full House was notorious for that.

I think of the animated sitcoms as different, because most didn't have laugh tracks.

I more meant live action sitcoms.

Sports night had a laugh track first episode or maybe first season, rest of the show was no laugh track. Earliest one I remember (and not in the list above)

Then I guess technically Dinosaurs, since that was puppets, but featuring live action people, idk. I never watched Sport Night like the other user suggested, but possibly that if that's the case.

Otherwise Malcolm actually looks up there, although there was a huge wave of non-laugh track sitcoms around that time it seems like.

Most shows throughout the 80s and 90s had live studio audiences. Laugh tracks didnt really become big until the 00s.

I'm using laugh track and studio audience synonymously, but I am referring to audience laughter.

I'm using laugh track and studio audience synonymously, but I am referring to audience laughter.

Theres an audible and visible difference between the two.

You're not getting it. I'm saying live action sitcoms without any laughter. Regardless of if it is studio audience or laugh track. Malcolm didn't have any laughter.

I read somewhere that most laugh tracks were recorded decades ago and just reused over and over, like recorded in the 50s. so you were hearing mostly dead people laughing

I don't know why my brain made the connections it did, but now I want to see a porn parody of Full House with the laugh track intact.

Just a full sex scene with the WOOOOOOOOOOOOs and the cheering.

Every single time someone wants to point out the difference between a laugh track and a studio audiences, it's safe to assume that they shouldn't. Just throwing in my two cents.

The creator of MASH didn't want a laugh track, because he didn't think setting was appropriate for one, but the studio overruled him. They compromised and didn't have a laugh track when they were in the operating room.
