Like I'm not a libertarian personally but there is always that one liberal that just HATES libertarians and is as much of a butt hole to them as possible.

Some of the hate stems from genuine confusion. It doesn't help that Republicans like Rand Paul pretend to have Libertarian credentials, or that the Tea Party waves around Atlas Shrugged as if it's their manifesto. Many people who profess to hate Libertarians have no idea what the official party platform says and hold up strawman Republican caricatures in its place.

In any case... some especially surly Liberals (and Russian bots) are making it really not-fun for me to be aligned with the left right now, but we have to keep our eyes on the prize. I'm laser-focused on removing Trump-Republicans from power, no matter how hard people try to pound on the Liberal / Libertarian wedge.

I like the concept of the libertarian, being socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but the reality of the libertarian is far different than if you just mashed liberals and republicans together. They always come off as too extreme and crazy, and resemble anarchists more than what I would think they'd be.

Like, I just want low government spending, while also letting gays marry and stuff. But instead I'm presented with wanting to defund fire stations and defunding road construction and shit.

There's really not a whole hell of a lot of useful purpose in having "marriage" as a governmental construct anyway. Expediting DPOA and probate, but that's about it.

I honestly don't understand why the government gives benefits to people who are married in the first place. Marriage is a religious ceremony. Why is a couple who participates in a specific religious ceremony afforded benefits that another couple who hasn't participated in that ceremony does not get afforded to them?

Calling for complete deregulation and allowing corporations to decide their own laws, and likewise defunding societal programs that keep the country running, will always turn me away from being a Libertarian. It doesn't help matters that the majority of those who call themselves such simply come off as the type that don't want to be called a Republican and have co-opted the terminology to fit their own personal political beliefs.

Like, we already went through an age where the government let businesses control things, and it was awful for workers everywhere, crashed markets, and led to multiple revolutions. Fuck that.

I don't doubt it's still the case in plenty of instances, and the present administration and Congress absolutely are pushing that more than any since Reagan, but it's no where near as bad as the Gilded Age

I'm a libertarian because I believe the Democrats pay more lip service to civil rights than they actually defend them.

As evidenced by how they handled an uncorroborated accusation recently.

I generally don't agree with the GOP on economic issues, though. Especially on healthcare - universal health care is fiscally more responsible.

I generally agree with this, although I wouldn't cite the Kavanaugh situation as an example. There's a fringe witch-hunt element to #MeToo but you can strip those voices away from the Kavanaugh case and there's still fire there.

Democrats have a much better record on civil rights since the last major party realignment. Too many of the party officials just stick their finger in the wind instead of actually leading on these issues, but they usually make the right choice once it's politically expedient to do so. At least they don't dig in their heels like the GOP.

The bigger argument I have with Democrats (which will have to wait until the Trump emergency is dealt with) is that the "progressive" movement-- which used to be purely a civil rights movement-- is now inextricable from Democratic Socialism. I'm okay with universal healthcare because it's the fiscally responsible choice, as you pointed out. But all the other wealth redistribution programs... not so much.
