At the beginning you're encouraged to fly really far away. As you get more comfortable with the suit you start flying closer and closer and one day you make a mistake and go splat.

If you just stick to flying safely far away from any surface there isn't really a problem

I saw a video of a guy that tried to buzz a bridge but ended up hitting the railing. Severed one leg right off at the hip.

I remember seeing it done it Within Temptation's music video 'Dangerous'. Looks like one of the most awesome things to do that make you feel truly alive.

Wonder how you get into that line of sport. Probably costs a shit load of money and they'll probably make you get a ton of skydiving experience first with some expert attached to your back.

Seeing how painful it looked whenever I crashed in the wingsuit in Just Cause 3, I think I'll stick with the video games version of this.
But if I had to try it for real someday..

flying is not the problem, it's the landing.

Flying is definitely the problem. The vast majority of these deaths come from flying too close to an object, like a mountain, antenna, rock outcropping, or bridge, and clipping them or outright running directly into them. Not from parachutes not opening during attempted landings.

One of the interviewers seemed kind of judgmental when he asked them "how many people have to die before you stop?" It's like they're trying to discourage the passion of people that the whole segment is about. Really could've worded it better

This is the correct answer.
The only particular "victim" here is whichever locale pays that helicopter pilot in the video. I can't help but wonder how much public funds go into scraping bits of thrill-seeker off the side of a mountain.

I thought people had to pay for it themselves, like with an ambulance. I think they get billed afterward.

Yeah the wingsuiter is the one paying for that airlift. Someone with insurance might have it covered but I'm pretty sure wingsuiters are uninsurable.

Eh, I'm with him. These people have a problem imo, just like people addicted to cocaine have a problem. Yeah it gives you an incredible rush like no other, but it's totally unsafe.

I've been skydiving and its an incredible experience. At one point I even thought about getting up to the level of using a wingsuit, so I can see why these people love doing it.

I'd never attempt to do some of the stunts these guys do like low flying or trying to shoot through a hole though. There's just too much unpredictability in doing that for me to ever try
