Video game characters have a track record of being complete idiots who do incredibly stupid things just so we have a video game to play (I mean JC is almost literally the only one who figured out that you can just leave the room when a super-powered boss is trying to kill you)

And never is this more obvious than horror games where often for dubious reasons our heroes travel alone or in a small group to really fucked up locations and then proceed to make long series of choices that make little sense and put them in danger.

Even when characters are supposed to be cannonically intelligent like Isaac Clark they still act like doofuses every step of the way just to give us gameplay and plot.

Some escape this by making it so the character is torturing themselves mentally, like Silent Hill 2. But James is still really dumb so that almost doesn't matter.

I mean Soma wasn't so bad but Simon's reaction to the ending made him out to be an utter idiot.

Who would you say is the brainest of our unlucky heroes?

Who is the smartest horror game protaganist in your opinion? And why?

To this day, I still think that was an intentional joke by the devs.

Most intelligent character in the game was probably Cybil though. Except for the whole giving a handgun to a civilian thing.

Rebecca does make some questionable decisions in her game. Like trusting an escaped prisoner 5 seconds after meeting him.

In all fairness, that was one of his first encounters with supernatural/nightmare side of SH.

I did like Harry Mason as a protagonist. He literally had nothing to do with the story, other than adopted Cheryl. And he isn't fazed by any of the nightmareish stuff, he just wants to save her.

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllll

That's debatable.

I guess it's not now because of the sequels. But originally it was debatable.

Yeah probably. I did kinda like the idea that Harry was just too dumb/dull to realise the awfulness occurring around him.

There was a lot of implications and insinuations that Harry in SH1 was a drug addict, which is what made his life a slump and everything he was seeing was a result of his drug addiction.

Unfortunatley because of the sequels, this implication went no where as yeah, everything you saw happen actually happened.

My point was that Harry *wasn't* a trained solider with experience (or even knowledge) of supernatural/undead phenomenon etc. Sure, he was shaken when he saw the ghost babies and flayed dogs for the first few times, but tried (and successfully) figured out what was going on (by cannon ending), which to me makes him pretty smart/intelligent.

No she doesn't

Billy saved her from a humanoid leech. Which convinces her that they need to stay together to survive. Even than she didn't trust him.
