The main thing that turned me off about it before was the procedural, "episodic" format. Hard to care about most of these episodes when they're self contained and unconnected. Series would have been much better if it just focused on Spike and Vicious.

Series would have been better if the Vicious episodes were limited to maybe two. Boob guy gets to stay, but the rest sucked.

Fuck, I'm bored. First 5 episodes were alright; it felt like somewhat important shit was actually going on (first ep, Spike and Jet, the first two Bebop members, are introduced. Second, Ein is introduced and joins the Bebop. Third, Faye is introduced. Fourth, Faye joins Bebop. Fifth, the main antagonist Vicious is introduced). None of these episodes felt too skippable. But 6 and 7 have nothing important whatsoever.

So most of the episodes are like that? Fuck, may as well look up what the important episodes are.

Dude, forget about getting into an overarching story. Just look at it as a long, oblique character development throughout the randomness. It's the only way to groove to those existential overtones.

The main story is really just Spike vs. Vicious. Episodes 5, 12, 13, 25 and 26 focus on that. Episode 5 (the church shootout episode) is easily the best episode so far; I highly doubt the show gets that good again until the finale. Episodes 12-13 sound pretty good based on the description.

You're really shortchanging yourself on this series if you skip the other episodes like that. Yes the series is mostly episodic but you get characterization from the cast in the middle of those episodes.

there are definitely some skippable eps, but just watching Spike's backstory is silly. There are some standalone eps that showcase Spike's badassness, and some that have backstory for the other characters. Why would you want to skip those?

I first saw it when I was like 12 or 13 years old, I really should do a rewatch as an adult to see what I really think of it now. In fact I should do that with a lot of those old Toonami and Adult Swim shows. GITS Stand Alone Complex for sure I would probably like a lot more now at 28 vs like 14, I found it boring back then but still watched every episode because I tried to watch all the anime I possibly could.

The only thing stopping me is that like you TC, I don't really care much for episodic shows.

Pretty much the only good part of the show. When I'm watching the episodic shit, I just find myself impatiently waiting to get back to the Vicious stuff. You know, the stuff that's actually important lol

The way this show is structured is terrible, tbh. People generally hate filler in anime, and Cowboy Bebop is full of it. It's like if DBZ was mainly comprised of a bunch of self contained filler episodes, with the actually important episodes only coming up every now and then. Think five filler episodes, then an important episode like Goku vs. Freeza, then more filler episodes, then back to the important Freeza stuff, then more filler episodes. Or Naruto, five filler episodes, then an important episode centering on Itachi, then more filler episodes and so on.
