Have you seen what the average cost of a hospital stay in America is? This shouldn't be surprising. It's unfortunate that something as important as your health is treated like a business in this country.

Iirc a hospitalist is the new standard hospital doc. They are a specialist in nothing, but can usually handle standard care until the patient is ready to leave the hospital or until they get a specialist.

If they didn't pay at least that much, doctors wouldn't be able to afford to live with all of their med school loans, malpractice insurance, and other overhead costs. Effective pay is like what, $50/hr or less (wild-ass guess)?

Basically, the doctor that manages you once you've been admitted to the hospital. Think of it like an inpatient primary care physician.

They're usually better at explaining to and answering questions from patients and family, though.

They're ridiculously underpaid, but their training is a lot less than it probably should be.

I can't tell you how many patients I've had get literally exactly the opposite medications of what they actually needed by EMTs. And it's not even their fault. They learn almost no pharmacology and even less physiology.
