That's a good point. If the xfl is going to be old-school style football where you can demolish the qb I'll be the first in line to watch.

This.

People play football because they WANT to sacrifice their bodies. They enjoy the thrill and risk of that. People watch largely because of the violent nature of the game. That becomes glorified, children watch it, and they say "Fuck yeah! I want to be part of that when I get older!" and then bam there's a huge talent pool to draw from.

With what the NFL is doing...they're fucking scaring people. "This game is just so violent, we need to impose massive game-changing rules every year to protect everyone". And now kids watch that shit and think "Oh...so this game is all about trying to be safe and protect your body...I don't know if that's for me...." And then they go play some sissy ass sport like soccer or knitting.

The point is this...the NFL is killing football. People respond to what they're doing. They embrace the culture. And right now the culture is "let's just be safe, first and foremost. Then, let's be competitive. Then, let's have fun. But not too much fun!" Hopefully the XFL doesn't replace the NFL, but rather pushes the NFL to get back to it's roots.

Yeah, we get it...the NFL may have had knowledge about CTEs or whatever. Look, the reality is that anyone who's EVER played football knows for a FACT that getting hit over and over has a negative effect on their brain and body, and that there's a good chance that too many can really fuck you up. That is not a new surprise or anything. At all. People have known this for hundreds and thousands of years. That is an indisputable fact. Why we refuse to acknowledge this is beyond me. For whatever reason we live in an age where we assume nobody knows anything unless the company who's selling the product or the employer employing the employee specifically says so. Which is just...really fucking stupid.

So what was my point? Oh yeah, the CTE thing is in the past now. Everyone now "officially" (even though everyone already knew) knows that concussions are bad for them. So if they want to play a game where you can take massive hits that will concuss you, that's their right. And we can glorify that all we want. Our bodies are finite. Use them up! Be HAPPY! Not safe!!!!

Everyone knew a serious concussion with loss of consciousness was bad. But playing through having your bell rung was really common at all levels of play. Linemen butting heads every single play wasn't on anyone's mind. Information about the impacts of frequent minor concussions was hidden.

No one is going to watch the XFL with garbage players. I don't give a damn what the current mood towards the NFL, what the political climate is, when they air it, none of that matters. Bad football and boring games will always result in people not tuning in.

If the XFL couldn't succeed at a time when the NFL was more popular and Vince was still riding the high of being "a marketing genius" whos shows were getting massive ratings, what on Earth makes people think he could have success now?

Most CTE from the NFL isn't from concussions. It's from general play like taking dives into the endzone and basic "safe" tackles.

The body can take some hits. It's not meant to take hits as a career.

people are delusional if they think we needed research to tell that NFL hits are bad for your body in a serious way.

NFL knew, but didn't care because its profitable. end of story.

now there is backlash and they need to "make the game safer". its all about making money. they don't give a crap about players' bodies. they knew they were getting fucked up from the get-go

It's a PRIVATE Organization, they can do whatever the eff they want.

You don't want to stand for the National Anthem, don't get employment at a company that requires it.

There are other jobs at other companies that won't require you to stand for the National Anthem.

There are trade offs in life, you choose to make that when you wanted a job as a NFL player for $$$

I doubt it will. People may tune in initially to see what the buzz is all about and to "stick it to the NFL!", but manufacturing fan bases out of thin air and getting people invested enough in what will always be looked at as a second rate league with poor quality of play is damn near impossible. Not to mention that the AAF(Alliance of American Football) is set to debut before the XFL relaunches in February of next year, meaning the buzz for an alternate league is going to be down.

Everyone's body expires. Our bodies were just not meant to hold up, period.

Most people do not suffer from CTE. The NFL has an extremely high rate of ex players that have it.

One of the things that rarely gets mentioned is the fact that the players union has pushed and pushed for "better" work-life balance and as a result players practice and workout much less these days than 20-40 years ago.

More practice and workouts = less injuries.

Thats not how head injuries work

More practice = more refined habits in terms of proper tackling, avoiding collisions, etc.

also = more head injuries when not even playing a game.

And don't even "nobody gets hurt in practice"

Literally John Madden's career as a player in the NFL ended before it even began because of a practice injury.
