How did you guys feel about the Darth Maul cameo

It was an effort to establish it in the timeline of the prequel movies.

What?

Darth Maul shows up at the end of the movie, and tells the woman to go back to him. Considering he dies in The Phantom Menace, they're effectively saying that Solo happens before or sometime during the movie. I personally just think it was a cheap throw into appeal to old Star Wars fans.

Animated series spoilers
Solo takes place after, but Darth Maul survived the attack in PM and actually comes back as a major antagonist in the animated series. He now has robotic legs since he was cut in half, which you can kind of see in Solo.

Han would have worked much better as a TV show. Disney should have saved it to kick off their streaming service.
I refuse to believe that series fatigue was a part of the cause especially when Marvel has Sooo much to offer every year and people are eating it up.
Seems like series fatigue is being used as an excuse for those who don't want to admit that the sequels have been mediocre at best

Marvel releases movies 2-3 movies a year but they consist of vastly different characters and settings.

Theres only so much I can care about seeing the Empire again, seeing Chewbacca again, seeing the Millennium Falcon flying away from tie fighters again. Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke arent big draws either lol

Then there was the lack of any trailer until what, 3 months before release? They royally ****ed up marketing for this film.

Im really curious to see what was shot before the directors were fired and Ron Howard came in to salvage what he could.

How does the Empire still exist in TFA if it was destroyed in RotJ?

Definitely Star Wars fatigue

It was literally released 6 months after The Last Jedi

This.

But if the movies had been better overall it could've still succeeded.

... No dude. That's not it at all.

Darth Maul gets brought back in the Clone Wars. Han Solo takes place after Revenge of the Sith by at least a few years, and probably about 15ish before A New Hope.

Why isn't the MCU suffering the same fatigue even though they've been releasing on the same schedules for like a decade now?

Because they're more varied. Different heroes, in different places, doing vastly different things, for different reasons. Star wars, meanwhile, has been stuck on the Empire vs Rebellion forever.

If the movies were distributed throughout the timeline better, its be a more apt comparison. Or, hell, if they focused outside that conflict a bit. But if every marvel movie for the next year was just iron man 4, 5, and 6, itd set in.

Theres only so many times you can do "scrappy band of rebels against the empire" before it gets exhausting

To be fair if the MCU reaches the point where we're seeing a prequel movie called Stark we'd probably see some fatigue there as well.

MCU has quality, and a lot of variety, the reason people are still interested in also because Marvel puts in 100% effort in practically all their films.

Disney Wars is just looking for a quick buck off the brand name like DCEU. Wonder Woman is the only exception for the DCEU.

Yeah I just think conceptually it's a bad idea for a movie. It's the kind of loregasm nonsense that only appeals to fanatics who need to know everything.

I also think the whole Obi-Wan and Boba Fett spinoffs are equally bad ideas but a lot of people seem to disagree on that.

If we get more spinoff films in the future I'd prefer they're more like Rogue One, or even further divorced from the main trilogies.

The MCU also has decades of rich source material. Star Wars does not.

If anything, the most recent films really highlight how shallow that universe actually is.

Plus, Marvel has several sub-franchises each containing it own web of characters. SW, at least the films, don't really have that bench.

@The Admiral

SW did have decades of rich material, it is called the EU which was thrown out so disney could make their own garbage which is 100% worse.

The EU had some garbage but the post ROTJ stories and fates of the main heroes was much better, handled believably, and was very popular which is why the ST story has been hated by long time fans.

I don't fucking know. Roommate told me that shit. I can't remember enough about them. *shrugs*

*looks above*

@WafflehouseJK Huh. Never saw Clone Wars, either. So, ok then. Thought it was a little fishy that Han Solo was in his 40s in ANH, and was 18 at the end of Solo. Roommate buzzed it as "He's humanoid, but maybe he has a longer life span. They never established that humans play by human rules in the Star Wars universe."

The cartoon brought Darth Maul back to life because hes such an iconic charactor with a rich backstory and had such a pivotal role in the films.

Im just joking, it was done to sell more toys to the kids watching the cartoon.

I was going to say. His backstory no longer exists, it made for a great book though.

But, yeah. No Harrison Ford. No one ever asked for this. 4 movies in like 3 years fatigue. Etc.

Solo was also basically two different movies cobbled together as one, and you can definitely see the contrast in some of the scenes.

The original Lord and Miller version was going to be comedy with with the tone of Deadpool, but this was nixed by Kathleen Kennedy when they were 70% done with shooting. Ron Howard had to re-shoot many of the scenes, and you the can see that the overall tone is wildly inconsistent because of it.
