I posted about this about a week ago. Basically I bought a 2008 volkswagen Passat that on the face of it may be the best deal I'll ever get in my life.

They typically go for 3.5-5k, I picked this one up for 1k. It's had one owner. Full service history and serviced every year. Any time anything went wrong they fixed it. It never failed an MOT (the UK test you have to put your car through every year to make sure it's road legal). For reference, my previous car failed every second MOT with a laundry list of advisories each year. This car had basically a blank MOT log. The last MOT only said "the front brake rotors have minor pitting but not critical".

I did a VCDS scan on it, no faults returned. All the electrics work on the inside. Like all the ones that usually go and people don't bother to fix - those all work.

The inside is clean as hell. Well, it was dirty but after a quick vacuum and a wipe down it's basically like sitting in a 2 year old Audi. There are shiny solid looking things everywhere.

There are only two issues: the first is some minor cosmetic rusting on one of the side wheel arches. The second is that it's done 250,000kms. That's a lot.

Naturally, sods law dictates that within a month I'm going to drive along and the turbo is going to fucking shit itself. I know it. It has to. Nobody gets deals like this from strangers.

The owner was a divorced lady who looked like she didn't exactly need the money. It also seemed like she didn't know much about cars. But she also didn't seem like a fool.

I think the vast majority of people way, way overreach themselves when it comes to cars and I don't ever want to be one of them. Like one guy I know earns 25k a year and wants to buy a 20k car, seems like this is quite normal for a lot of people. I like having something cheap, bought outright with cash and that I don't mind breaking.

Anyway I think this car is pretty great, although I'll take it for a full service to be sure.

250,000 isnt horrible. Those VWs can last a super long time. Plus its had one driver and she probably drove 10 under the speed limit at all times

Yeah, I cleaned it up but noticed a few problems.1) needs a clay bar, badly. 2) looks like her primary washing method was an auto brush wash, and 3) some rust spots to fix before winter arrives
