I finally went and purchased a new phone yesterday (I had my iPhone 6 for three years, and the WiFi chip was busted, the GPS had been broken for about a year, the home button didnt work, and the headphone jack was on its way out.)

Checked my bank account after a few hours of night terrors over my frivolous purchase (I paid $450 upfront) and I still have $1700. I honestly thought I was gonna be below 1k, which wouldve seriously fucked me up.

I... have some serious issues with money.

Doesn't anyone fix things anymore? Where did this mentality of throw it out and buy another come from? How do you even break a GPS and wifi chip?

My phone is starting to have issues, but only with the audio jack. Which is a shame, since that means I have nothing to listen to music on when I go for a walk. -_-

Also, what is so special about having money in your bank account? Even I have money in my account.

This is why I'll never own one of these smartphone things. They're overpriced, expensive monthly fee, fragile, and pretty much considered obsolete after only like what, 3 years?

They're overpriced

Mine was $20

expensive monthly fee

Prepaid, I put $5 on almost a year ago and haven't topped up since. Need to by the end of the month though, or the card will expire.

fragile

Don't know about other phones, but seeing cracked screens and the like, I wonder how poorly others treat their stuff. Mine has had a few drops while I'm out without serious issues, just a few nicks around the edges.

Well, mine was pretty crap for storage space even when I got it so games are out, but fine for the stuff I need (browser, Steam, PSN, bank, email, etc) since they are all between 10 and 50MB.

You are looking only at the people getting every new version of the biggest one, not everyone does that. My cheap one is fine for anything that doesn't demand a gig of install space.

My iPhone 6 as pretty great, tbh. And its esentially a computer in my pocket, so Im willing to dish out the cash every few years, especially since I was running low on storage on the 6

Sometimes a GPS chip gets fried, especially because I use my phone pretty heavily.

I /tried/ to get it fixed, but that wouldve cost like, half the price I paid for the iPhone 8. Thiss gonna last me for another few years.

Anyway, who are you to judge? Im sure you spend cash on things way more frivolous than handheld computers.

You're better off than like 50% of Americans, just to let you know. You can always save more of course, but it sounds like you're being frugal by holding out that long to replace a phone, so good job, man. Don't sweat it. Sometimes, life happens and you gotta spend the dough. You'll make it back.

Yeah, as it stands, I have enough money to pay for rent and other bills for the next two months, plus groceries, but Im really, really skittish when it comes to money matters.

Like, I know Im good, but I have this weird anxiety about not having enough.

Probably because my dad always tells me that I should always have at least $3000 in my bank account, and that the women behind the counter at the bank will all laugh about me behind my back if I dont. <_<

I know its not true, but...

I don't exactly make much money, but I'm always careful with the money I do have. I had a bunch of stuff pile up recently with less work hours & more expenses, and I was so busy I couldn't even get out to cash my check until I got a whole new check. Even then (and after paying bills) I still had nearly $300 left just before cashing the checks.

If you're willing to get an older phone it's pretty cheap. I paid $100 for a five year old Galaxy S5 and it works just fine for me. As long as you get a case and/or screen protector the hardware should last.
