this shit is going to be Katrina level bad I fear......

Deaths-wise, absolutely not. The circumstances that allowed Katrina to be so deadly don't really exist in this area. Costwise, it might be closer. Harvey tied Katrina in terms of damage, and Florence looks to be trying something similar, with the whole "sit around and dump a bunch of rain" thing.

Doubt those would help against hurricane level floods tbh. Those are more for spring flooding near creeks and rivers weepingbell
IC

So how big do they need to make those to deal with Hurricane level floods?

Now it is suppose to be a category 5 when it hits land. From someone in Hampton Roads I expect my house to be gone when I get back.

Yeah I'm not seeing anything about it becoming category 5.

These things can vary by the hour. Last model I saw had it down to a cat 3 when it hit land; still bad, but it could make a big difference. Also have to factor in how your house is rated against storms, and just sheer luck.

It's also possible that whatever news outlet you're following is embellishing slightly, whether it's due to chasing ratings or a more benevolent 'better safe than sorry' motivation. I kinda wish all coastal states had their own regional equivalent of SW Florida weather news like WINK; they're vets when it comes to forecasting and reporting on hurricanes (they called Irma's inland turn first), they have a vested interest in predicting them as accurately as possible (since, well, they live here too), and they never sensationalize.

I know it's empty advice, but stay positive. Irma proved for me that miracles can happen even up to the last minute.

you've not lived here long then. more and more the track puts the storm further and further south towards NC/SC boarder. worst i expect is Isabel level damage/flooding, though i could do without all the downed trees.

As I kid I was partial to Fox Cincinnati's WXIX for some reason, but yeah, WINK is a pretty classy code.

Speaking of, according to their article Flo will be just shy of a Cat 5 threshold over the ocean, but it didn't make mention of what strength it would be at landfall. Flo still has something like 400-500 miles to travel in a sharper NW direction though, and taking my asspull meteorological knowledge into account, I assume the ocean waters will be a few degrees cooler the further north it goes, which should hopefully sap some of its power (I haven't seen an ocean temp model in awhile though, so that could be off-base).

According to CBS's afternoon report it's a tropical storm, not a 'cane; max windspeeds would be less than half of what Florence currently is. Still a hazardous situation, but shouldn't be anything catastrophic.

Still, I hope all that rain won't severely damage anything there... Stay safe everyone. Hurricanes and storms suck.

Looks like it's gonna stall right there on the coast for at least two whole days. Please stay safe everyone. Get out if you still can.
