Unless there are stereotypical features, people just automatically assume cartoon characters are the race that are predominant in the culture they were raised in. Why do white people think Homer and Marge Simpson are white, that stick figures are white, that random blue skin characters from shows like Doug, Kim Possible and adventure time are white.

Nah bro, if she had black hair and black eyes you'd probably assume she's Asian or some shit. Would she actually look Asian? No, and she doesn't look White in your pic, either.

No human being has tiny dots for nostrils. She doesn't even have lips. Where the fuck even is her jawline? Cheekbones? Her eyeballs look like they're part of her skin, too.

I don't assume they're white by looking at their designs. I would assume the Simpsons to be white because they sound like white people and I can picture white people having their personalities.

"But what if they were aliens!" Well, we already know that The Simpsons are human, so logically they've have to be a human ethnicity. Given how they sound and act like how I'd picture a white family, I'd assume them to be white.

Exactly. And anime characters have Japanese voices. If we're go by dubs, that's more evidence, since would you suddenly think Homer was Japanese or whatever with the Japanese dub?

It's like the only reason people assume anime characters to be white is because of light skin, big blue eyes and blonde hair. But light skin isn't exclusive to white people, big eyes aren't exclusive to white people, anyone can put on blue contacts and anyone can dye their hair blonde.

I don't know about Doug, Kim Possible, or stick figures, but I figure the Simpsons (and most other yellow-colored characters) are supposed to be white because we can contrast them with characters we know are supposed to be other races, like Carl, Cookie Kwan, and Apu.

I've never assumed the race of any character in anime, it's so weird that people care about this . If it's relevant to the story, their race will be stated or talked about in the series, if it isn't brought up then it doesn't matter at all. Especially in fantastical settings where humans didn't even came about like humans in our world.

Naruto is just a dude with spiky blonde hair, blue eyes and freaking cat-like whiskers. If that makes him white then well, I'm surprised.

Weirdly enough most of the time someone says "why do anime characters look like white people" the person who says that is white.

I do wonder though, if you assume that characters like Naruto and Ino are white because they have naturally blonde hair and blue eyes, what race is Sakura? A girl with naturally pink hair and green eyes? Or Hinata with her natural blue hair? @Volkswagen_Bros

they're not supposed to be photo-realistic

and as a counter-example, we can SOMEHOW identify the griffins (family guy) as white despite them having completely unrealistic features, so how does that work?

Sometimes, its just fun to speculate and hypothesize their race based on physical appearance alone, say, if they were real life people.
As far as Sakura goes, I always thought of her as Eurasian. Hinata strikes me as a Japanese woman.

Pink, blue, white, orange hair sometimes are the colors the audience sees, but to the other characters it is probably brown or black hair. Odd colored hair is used to make characters stand out.

oh, yeah I understand the "you gotta have blue hair" trope, I agree with you on seitokai yakuindomo because of its setting. But in works like Naruto, where you're dealing with a unique universe it's seems ok to me that they have weird hair colors

Anyway, if I recall correctly it is actually stated that Hinata got her blue hair from her mother. Nobody considers her hair color weird, so having natural weird hair colors in that universe is not something rare.

Furthermore, Sakura has pink hair and her name does mean cherry blossoms, she has a whole theme going on there.
