And why do I keep fighting the urge to go to sleep when its time to sleep?

You're asking the wrong person here. I only sleep at the max 5 hours a night. I wish I could sleep more

the bus only comes about once an hour over here, so five extra minutes can mean getting to work an hour late

Depends on your work and life. Just have work until about 5? You probably need a better sleep schedule. Turn off stuff near bed time, discipline yourself to stop staying up.

I know it sucks to just work > eat > sleep but it's pretty standard.

This sounds exactly like me except my job isn't at risk because of it. I consider it a win if I get 6 hours of sleep, but I just need that extra 5 minutes.

And yes, I should be asleep already.

It effects me zero, like I said, that's the max. I never sleep more than 5 hours a night, been like that for years. Doesn't matter if I'm drunk and stoned, dosn't matter if I'm out camping, doesn't matter if I hiked for 30 miles. For about 20 years now all I do is sleep about 4-5 hours a night, and wake up feeling great. Well, not great, I'm depressed as shit, but that's not due to lack of sleep, but due to the lack of friends.

I usually go to bed around 12-12:30 AM and get up around 6:30 AM. I don't actually feel very tired at work and during the day.

Usually around 11:30 PMish I start to feel tired and should probably go to sleep then but I like to get as much free/leisure time in as possible.

Sometimes schedules can allow for that. 6 hours is fine for a lot of people. It's only a problem if you feel really drained.
