I personally would go for World since you can get a ton more hours out of it than God of War. Then again, if you want a good story and a more standard (but still very fun) gameplay experience, God of War would be a better choice.

I tried MHW as my first entry in the series and it really didn't hook me. I feel I gave it a fair chance, but it's just not my thing. Especially after hearing it's a massive gameplay loop.

Some people may like that, and you might like it too. I like the presentation and the monsters have some cool designs, but overall, I ultimately ate the $60 because I haven't opened it in months.

GoW sounds like a more standard single-player story-driven experience. I've never played any of them though.

Gameplay loop?

The end goal of Monster Hunter is to kill things to harvest their parts, to build better armor and weapons so you can kill bigger things to harvest their parts to build better armor and weapons so you can kill bigger things.

Gameplay loop?

Monster Hunter is a game of incremental character progression through action (fighting boss-like monsters) and reward (loot and subsequent equipment gains). You fight a monster (which, even initially, is a fifteen minute or more ordeal, especially if you're new to the series) and get pelts, talons, feathers, etc. when you beat it. You use those to craft new weapons and armor (which are meant to resemble the creature whose parts you used to make it), which give you better stats and allow you to take on more powerful monsters. And those powerful monsters lead to even more powerful monsters, and so on.

The fun of the game comes from the enjoyable combat (if it's your thing) and the sense of getting better and cooler equipment. It also comes from screwing around and hunting with your friends online.

I just noticed Monster Hunter World came out on PC a month ago.. checking out reviews, but I might get it down the road when it's on sale.. even at full price, it's apparently a very long game, so it'd be more than worth it on a $/hours ratio.
I enjoyed MMO's road to high level more than the endless grinding of the end dungeons, so this might be a good game for me.

If you want replayability with online multiplayer, MHW is probably your game. God of War is a solid single player game.
