This made me sad so I wanted to share it so I'm not the only one sad.

Also three white rhinos.

Poachers really do suck. I'd love to see somebody cut their ballsacks off. Have you ever seen a rhino running around without a horn? Sad sight.

Short sighted fucks.

Let's wipe a species out forever and deprive the entire planet just so we can get a few bucks we will spend and then be poor again a month from now

Botswana disarmed its anti-poaching unit in May, one month after President Mokgweetsi Masisi took office. The country previously had a shoot-to-kill policy against poachers. The BBC reports a "senior official in the president's office, Carter Morupisi, told journalists in Botswana at the time that the 'government has decided to withdraw military weapons and equipment from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks', but he did not explain why."

Bad idea. Very bad idea.

Legalize the ivory trade again. It will lead to private elephant ranches with a vested interest in poaching poachers.

The concept has already been successful for rhinos: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/08/wildlife-watch-rhino-horn-south-africa-auction/

Makes sense. Other animal farming we legalize tends to make for large populations of those animals. Whether its chickens, cows, or pigs. Might be more difficult for elephants and they won't be in the wild, but they'll exist.

I imagine it would be a lot more difficult to manage for other animals, like whales, due to the logistical challenges of farming ocean-bound, large animals.

Time to legalize poacher hunting licenses. All these big game hunters can hunt the most dangerous game.

I think it is a two pronged thing that not only did domestication/farming allow for large populations of said animals but also the nature of said animals allowed for domestication/farming and having a large population. Elephant pregnancy lasts like 18 months and it takes aaaages for them to reach maturity. You'd probably just as likely have poachers raid a so called "farm" before the animals even reach sexual maturity before it could be learned how to turn it into a sustainable system, let alone a profitable one

That is a far point. It would take a significant investment of time, manpower, and secure facilities. You would need a large area for the elephants to inhabit, if just for their size, and a significant armed security force fo patrol it. Not to mention the significant cost sink with a very delayed return on investment.

I suppose you could supplement the ivory (and whatever other resources you could extract from the elephants) farming aspect by allowing for tourist excursions on the ranch. Maybe some occasional trophy hunting allowances.

There are private military companies who have been hired to help train anti-poaching units in Africa. More power to them.

I know a lot of avid hunters, but only two who would be eager and daring enough to hunt poachers. It's gotta be a shoot on sight deal, though. None of this hands up, catch, inspect, short jail-time, then release horseshit. That would be too dangerous and frustrating even for them. I pity the park rangers who put up with that nonsense.
