Especially missable rare drops that you have to go out of your way to farm if you want all the items?

One of my luckiest feats was probably only getting the Sword of Kings in Earthbound after only like ten minutes.

In FF4 there are monsters which drop summon spells at a 1/1280 drop rate.

And there are four of them. At least they're not missable though.

By far the worst offender of this is FF9's Excalibur II.

What? FF9's Excalibur II doesn't have a "drop" rate.

Yeah, I mostly mean in the "absurdly rare (missable) item that makes completionist playthroughs way worse than they would be otherwise" sort of category. Excalibur II may not have a drop rate, but getting to it without dropping any missables is quite a feat. Especially if you're one of those perfect stats types with FF9.

It's why I'll will never have a truly complete run of FF9. But I may do a "complete aside from Excalibur II' playthrough one day.

The Sword of Kings has a 1/128 chance. Jeez that doesn't compare to those ff4 summon spells

1/128 is still a pain.

The nice thing about the PSP version of FF4 is that there's auto battle, and relatively weak enemies drop all the summons. So it's very easy to just watch show/movie and let the game grind for you.

Because no one in Japan got the memo that grinding isn't any damn fun.

in dragon warrior 7 monsters dropping any item at all was rare
but them dropping a monster heart only had a 1 in 400 chance of happening even when they dropped an item

in dragon warrior 7 at one point you can change jobs and once you learned the right combination you unlock hybrid jobs which are more powerful. there are basically 3 tiers of jobs

base jobs, hybrid jobs, ultimate jobs

if you have a monster heart you can go to the temple to change class into a special monster class with its own stats and abilities

there are about the same number of monster classes as there are normal classes
the base monster classes arent anything special but the hybrid and ultimate monster classes are some of the most powerful classes in the game

and if you want to unlock them you need the patience of a saint

you need to get all the base monster hearts to unlock the stronger ones just by mastering the base ones
but even those take forever to get
you can get most through a mix and match card game in the casino but its rare for them to show up as a rewards. there are a few treasure chests in the game that have them.

but there are 3 base monster hearts that can only be obtained from battle so you need to deal with the low drop rate and the 1 in 400 chance of that drop being a heart

This is why I don't have OCD about missing things and just enjoy playing games instead of worrying about them.
