The economy is currently built on a consumption model.
Look at the average house hold debt, and I'm not talking about those on welfare/and or broke. People, in general, are leveraged to the hilt in the US. The number gets even larger if you factor in mortgages. Ever wonder why interest rates are kept low? One of the big reasons is to encourage spending, it makes debt cheap and thrift expensive. This how the country functions even though real wages, once controlled for inflation, have been stagnant for years for majority of Americans. --- You know how fads are.
