There were also the instances of violence: a Millerite church was burned in Ithaca, and two were vandalized in Dansville and Scottsville. In Loraine, Illinois, a mob attacked the Millerite congregation with clubs and knives, while a group in Toronto was tarred and feathered. Shots were fired at another Canadian group meeting in a private house.[16]

Date setters are the biggest joke in Christianity. If the Bible says that not even Jesus knows when he is going to return (only the Father is supposed to know when that is), then why would some random preacher be privy to that knowledge?

This is a very reasonable point.

Do you remember that idiot, Harold Camping? CE had a good laugh at that guy, and how sure he was about the date(s), even after he was proven wrong once. Strange, also, giving 2 dates for the end of the world.

These events paved the way for the Adventists who formed the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They contended that what had happened on October 22 was not Jesus' return, as Miller had thought, but the start of Jesus' final work of atonement, the cleansing in the heavenly sanctuary, leading up to the Second Coming.

wow, so an entire denomination that persists today was founded because they didn't want to admit that this guy was completely talking out of his ass

Ehh, I am part of that religion. The religion itself has transformed to a more healthy-living type religion and is pretty distanced from this event at this point.

Imagine still believing in God after your beliefs are completely proven wrong. Damn humans are stupid.

That's a better comparison.

Just because some nobody ended up being wrong about the world ending doesn't mean the entire religion is proven wrong, wtf.

Well, after a certain number of times, it starts to get suspect. There's an entire article about bold predictions that didn't pan out. One of the guys who got several wrong throughout 40 years is still guessing the end times today.

Imagine still believing in medicine after some practices have been completely proven wrong (such as homeopathy or bloodletting). Damn humans are stupid.
