Really, Metroid shouldn't cater to Japan at all, they don't buy the series, regardless if you do or don't. Other M proved that.

The Japanese want Wii Party U, give them that instead.

Idk how everyone forgets Samus Returns is a thing. It returns to the classic Metroid formula and if anything Samus is more of a badass than ever.

It also has nothing to do with the Zero Suit because the Zero Suit section in Zero Mission was tense and not sexualized at all. It's more along the lines of the dev team actually having Samus speak after being a strong and silent protag for so long (aka, her characterization comes from what the player imagines her to be), and it being bullshit when executed. Like not only do they make her out to be weak but it's nonsensical to the lengths they take it. Like really, you need authorization from Adam to activate the Varia Suit? So you're fine with just cooking alive before then. Nobody cares if there's no story reason for you to be collecting upgrades in a Metroid game. It's fun. That's the only reason you need.

Really we will have to see how Prime 4 plays out before we can say she's ruined.

It's a shame because there are plenty of good Western Devs that can handle the Metroid franchise as seen by the Prime series.

To be fair, Nintendo themselves are more than capable of making a good Metroid game as long as they don't decide to be backwards with women.

She absolutely did. Her characterization obviously wasn't very deep, but Other M managed to clash with even that. Even if she didn't talk, you can infer some things from a woman who travels alone throughout the universe, collecting bounties and wiping out massive, powerful creatures on her own.

Nah. I always imagined myself monitoring her progress through the viewing screen. It's why I could never play the Prime games. To me, the third person perspective is a large part of the story.

I also think it's a shame that they're so quick to get rid of the armored suit. I'd rank it third behind Batman and Robocop for the most badass hero costumes of all time. That thing should be in sight 90% of the time.

That's Nintendo's fault for not making enough Metroid games. Samus Returns seems like it was a step in the right direction, but it was also a remake. It's just a franchise that doesn't have a high enough output of games.

That's Nintendo's fault for not making enough Metroid games. Samus Returns seems like it was a step in the right direction, but it was also a remake. It's just a franchise that doesn't have a high enough output of games.

Nintendo always had a history of pushing boundaries but it looks like a lot of companies and franchises are scared of going into new territory so they remake what they think worked well in the past.

EVEN THEN it was a single printing and Gamestop exclusive.

Like I mentioned, I believe silent protagonists are made that way so the player feels like they are them. Like Red, Claude, Jak (in the first game), Master Chief (more so earlier on) ect...

Other M had a lot of problems, but I feel like people pick the wrong ones to obsess over.

At a high level, the character thing is a nonissue. Samus goes to investigate, runs into Adam and crew. Adam refuses to let her assist unless she promises to do absolutely nothing without his authorization. She agrees, because she needs to complete her investigation. After her patience with this agreement is tried many times, in increasingly absurd ways, she finally breaks the agreement because screw Adam's rules. And of course he made her agree to it to keep her from learning too much, blah blah. The details of it, more than anything just amount to gameplay design. It's clear Nintendo just wanted a different in-universe explanation for the powerup progression than in every other game. I don't know how this became the entire world's fixation related to this game.

No, the much bigger problems were that Samus was apparently a total b***** special snowflake back when she knew Adam (hich was tolerated in the space army for some reason, and encouraged in the game's story), she apparently did a 180 and became more fond of following orders after quitting the space army because she didn't want to follow orders anymore., tapping the D pad makes you invincible, there's nothing interesting to find when you explore as all the significant upgrades are given to you in story, none of the optional upgrades even matter since you're invincible when tapping the D-pad, the damn pixel hunts are too hard and no fun at all (and when you do find what you're looking for, you have to stare at it forever for it to trigger, which throws you off and makes you think it was actually something else you were supposed to find), flipping the wiimote and pushing the D-pad in that position is BS, they literally named the place "the bottle ship," and that the story was literally ANOTHER "we're trying to rebreed metroids" story even after having hours of cutscene like they were going to be creative this time.

Never played X. But 2 actually upset me. 1 was a great game not only because it subverted so many shitty JRPG tropes but it also felt so polished even when you were doing some of the most brutal grinding for sidequests.

Then when Nintendo realized how much demand there was for the series they turned around and pandered so hard to the Japanese (the country and the webs) fanbase and out came 2. Most of the areas feel like recycled environments from 1 besides Mor Ardain. Side quests mean jack shit except for the ones for blades since you can just max area affinity and get rich salvaging. Speaking of blades theyre by far the worst part of the game. Which is terrible because theyre so pervasive. Locked behind pseudo-gacha which the Japanese seem to love but like, why??? And they make the combat flow worse. The design also sucks ass. 90% of them are tropey anime girls and some of them are drawn by legitimate hentai artists. Ffs

I personally enjoyed Xenoblade 2 a lot, but I have faith that they're not gonna continue in that art style in the future. Takahashi specifically wanted to create a game that looked and felt like an anime and out came Xenoblade 2.

But the actual topic on hand...I don't particularly care if Samus's character was "ruined." Not even in Other M...that wasn't really the problem I had with the game's story. Yeah she was uncharacteristically passive, but if she was supposed to be increasingly annoyed having to put up with taking orders then it was badly written and not conveyed well...which is a problem throughout the game. They're still having her actually kick ass and looking badass in her suit, and that's all I care about.

my nephew thinks she is a robot. he only plays Melee, and in that she is all fully covered. and he doesnt' know her story. I noticed that when we fight each other, he only will play male characters. he doesn't want to be a girl. however, he includes Samus in his selections. because he thinks she is just a robot.
