My asshole friend broke my strings on my acoustic guitar. He took it and went out and had it restrung with steel strings. I don't like the sound AT ALL. I usually get Ernie Ball nickel I think? I think it's nickel.. but these strings he got on there fuckin suck.

I love slinkys. I know how to restring a guitar. My asshole friend busted mine and thought he knew what he was doing and had the damn thing restrung. I didn't pay for it but now I guess i'll just break these things and do it myself and never let him touch my guitar again

Restringing is easy enough, but a time consuming task that I'd rather pay someone else to do. But I do own 13 basses, a guitar, and a banjo.

I've been playing for years now, lemme think... damn about 15 years now.

Sadly I've been playing a lot less recently, but I have been playing piano a bit lately.

I used to have an acoustic too, now I just have an electric.

it also didn't help that i lead in with 'learn to restring' but i really did think you might've been looking for a next step.

i've got a couple guitars but i wouldn't say i'm very good, probably better at tuning them than playing them.

my personal advice on acoustic strings:

never get coated strings.

i usually prefer a regular bronze (even tho they dont last as long, i think its good to have to change the strings more often anyways).

i also prefer a lighter gauge on acoustic because i usually play finger-style.

Probably this. There is some variation in string feel, but sound is generally pretty universal.

What would you consider a lighter gauge? I use .13-.56 bronze and play a lot of finger-style. They feel pretty heavy to me but I can't play with anything lighter.

if they start on 0.13 thats more of a medium gauge imo. i usually start at 0.12

yes these tiny increments make a lot of difference lol

Yeah, it took me years to find what worked best for me. I use thicker strings on my electric guitars and they still somehow feel lighter than the mediums on acoustic so it's pretty weird.

I also highly recommend bronze over steel for acoustic. The bronze strings do get a layer of oxidation much faster than nickel/steel if you let them sit for a while without playing but it's not a big deal.

Also, does anyone else use the mobile version of Guiter Pro? It used to be good but its shit now.

I have 1.5.3 from around 2013 and it works well enough on my old tablet. Plays everything I throw at it.

On PC I used GP5 for years before installing GP6, which I thought sucked. I have them both installed but only ever use 5 and have no desire to ever update again.

my next purchase will be an electric bass, as soon as I have disposable income

i also need to fix up my acoustics - one just needs new strings and a truss rod adjustment, and the other has a peeling bridge and possibly a warped/bowed neck (so that's more of a restoration project than anything)

Ah, shame about the truss rod. Are they easy/cheap to replace?

My bass came in BEADGC tuning but I found myself not really using the lower notes on the Low B, and the notes on the higher end of the Low B string just sounded clearer when I shifted them over to the low E.

I also like having the higher B and E strings as it gives me a lot of fun melodic options.

If you ever replace the truss rod on the other bass, give the EADGBE tuning a try, it's a lot of fun.

In theory they can be replaced, but it's not cheap cause you need to take the fret board off to get to it, so it's not really worth it. Might set my ESP up EADGBE to see how I like it. But first I need to figure out a better amp setup.
