I've been seeing a lot lately that if you "gift" money instead of tip it, the server doesn't have to report it as income.

I know gifts don't have to be reported, but it seems the gift only occurred in response to a service being performed, so it is compensation regardless of what you call it.

This always comes from libertarian types tho so of course they're likely wrong.

Never heard of this method, but I know when I was a server, I appreciated cash tips on credit purchases as I didnt have to report those.
