I started playing through the game again recently, and I don't like either of them. At least you only have to play Blitzball once, whereas the Cloisters are mandatory and grind the momentum of the game to a halt.

The only cloister that irritated me was the Lake Macalania one, not for being difficult but for taking a while to fully complete while also being placed right in the middle of a fairly important revelation in the story.

That's honestly what made me make this topic. You're at such an important part of the story, right after a pivotal boss battle, and then you're stuck doing this drawn out and rather frustrating puzzle.

I mean I can appreciate the attempt at bringing a sense of variety in the game. The trials serve to help with the pacing in the main quest so its not just cutscene-battle-cutscene the whole time. They were just handled rather poorly on a few occasions, the aforementioned example being one of my least favorites.

Blitzball is fun but I don't have as much time to sink into it like I did as a teenager. I came close to maxing out my team back then simply because I enjoyed playing. As an adult I have to budget my time too much to be spending hours upon hours on a minigame.

Yeah, I dont remember much at all about FFX. I remember forcing myself to finish it because I was already close to the end. I remember that you didnt actually get to pilot the airship, it was basically just pick a point and teleport. That was a big disappointment for me.

I beat it once when it was new and never touched it again.

Everything but the battle system was bad in one way or another. But the Cloister of Trials were just monumentally stupid. They were not fun, they made no sense in terms of the story, and they ruined the pace of the story as well in several places (Macalania being the most obvious example).

I wish the Cloister puzzles were more intuitive. Like in a Zelda game, I can generally see what needs to be done. Maybe I need to blow open a hole in the wall to let the sun in and then position a series of mirrors so that they reflect the light onto a trigger--the general premise is clear. In the Cloisters, it feels like I'm just moving spheres from one slot to another until I have them where they're supposed to go.

Until you get to that one with the moving platforms. That one was as bad as I remembered (I recently replayed FFX a few months ago).

Once you get past the obnoxious first game, blitzball becomes a lot more reasonable. I don't recall having any beef with the Cloister of Trials either. I can't say either of them are super fun, but there is more involved action going on with Blitzball even if it resolves into a grind by the game's end, and that makes me prefer it to the Cloisters.

I really wish both of them had been better. Neither of them is a gamebreaker for me, but they don't add anything. As someone already mentioned, the combat in the game is great, fast paced and enjoyable. And I like the story, even if I don't like some of the characters. Overall, I find Final Fantasy X to be a good but heavily flawed game.

Yeah, Bevelle is terrible. The rest were fun though (even the Zanarkand block puzzles).

This. That match is crazy easy. Steal the ball ASAP and do nothing but hide by your goalie constantly passing between teammates to gain EXP

After halftime, equip Jecht shot, go wide to one side when you get the ball, then fucking bull rush the goal with Tidus and Jecht Shot the two defenders out of your way.

When Wakka comes in, rinse and repeat but with Venom Shot.

I fucking hated that shit the first time I played, then I learned the above strategy and always win that game 2 or sometimes 3 to 0 on subsequent playthroughs

Then I started playing it and getting into it for Wakka's Overdrives and I really started to enjoy it since you don't have to cheese like the first match and can recruit new players

Also save scum for Nimrook to leave the Psyches as a free agent. He's a fucking beast mode goalie.

Only one cloister is bad and that's bevelle, and only because you're waiting on the platforms which move slowly tbh. Or else too fast and you have to restart the entire section since you missed your stop and if you turn around it'll resume travel in the same direction. So basically, there's no winning.

Can't miss the treasure sphere for baaj though.

You could literally kite the entire opposing team and not get caught cuz Brother is fast af and has the hots for Yuna and then just pass it to your open ass teammate in front of the goal

I just finished the Bevelle trials. It's not as if it's overly difficult, but it's long and slow and uninteresting. There's never any sense that you're accomplishing anything. It's just more of the take a sphere from one place and move it to another place formula, only it's made more complicated (and much slower) by the moving platforms.

Blitzball

If you know how to beat The Trials, then they're really quick and easy. Blitzball is a huge pain in the ass to play because if you have a good team, then you're just scoring and waiting until the clock dies. If you have a terrible team, then it's frustrating to see the ball get passed around and you have nothing to do
