We've spent -millions- on failover clustering, separate data centers for DR, primary / secondary / read-only Database nodes, 99.9% of API calls we handle are dealt with in less than 200 milliseconds. We go down for 5 and all our customers immediately start complaining. They complain even when our UAT environment goes down. It gets really tiring. The instances of reddit being down for more than an hour for the past few years I feel like I can count on my two hands. I could be wrong. Obviously I'm not on all the time, but I'm on reddit pretty habitually. Don't disagree with you on wikipedia though.
