I always just thought this was common sense. You know, "when in rome" and all that. So why are European countries letting their immigrants come over and create mini snow globe versions of whatever country they fled from? Doesn't that defeat the point of immigrating?

I mean, I know that when I go on vacation i dont try to recreate the appalacian culture I'm fleeing from.

European leaders are short sighted morons who just don't seem to give a fuck that before the turn of the century their own native people will end up as minorities in their own countries. They don't care if they don't assimilate. It won't affect them since they'll all be dead by that point. All they're looking for is people who can fill jobs and boost the economy in the present. You can have both can't you? We have areas in the us that are China Town or little Italy. Those people are probably pretty interested into the society regardless

You can have both can't you? We have areas in the us that are China Town or little Italy. Those people are probably pretty interested into the society regardless

Those are just culturally influenced places though. :v We don't let China Town or Little Italy write their own laws or have their own police force or stuff like that. These places in Europe are basically outside the jurisdiction of the rest of the country. Its crazy.

I don't mind if they want to continue to live according to the traditions of their cultures, at least the parts they want to because they are escaping the worst aspects. However, I would like it if they made an effort to learn the local languages and customs. Not everyone drives on the same side of the road, and turn signals were invented for a goddamn reason.

They should at least make an attempt to learn the language and laws of the country they move too. At least to the point they can do some basic communication and not get in legal trouble.

If a customer who is a latin immigrant asks if I speak Spanish then Ill gladly speak to them in Spanish.

However, if they assume I speak Spanish and confidently come up and start talking to me in Spanish, I will immediately pretend to not speak it. (I make an exception for disabled or elderly.)

They then almost always make an effort to ask in broken English. But in some cases they have gotten upset that theres no translator. And Ive had no sympathy in those cases. Theyre young or middle-aged, they have smartphones set to Spanish, they use Facebook in Spanish and browse the internet for information and answers to their questions in spanish. Make an effort, type traducir.

Yeah this is California, yeah this is the liberal Bay Area, but you still need to make an effort and take responsibility for your navigation through life. Ive never had a Pakistani, Nepali, Eritrean, or Mien immigrant get upset over us not having a translator. Which is because they bring a friend or family member to translate, or show us what they want on their phone or paper.

It's not racist in theory because of course immigrants need to assimilate otherwise there's going to be problems

However "assimilate" can be used as a bit of a dog whistle too.

It's less (and also more) scary if you look into it a bit deeper. There are definitely groups that think this way. But right now there are not no-go zones in the UK, like so many articles suggest.

I think there are very disingenuous arguments coming from both ends of the spectrum on this topic. You have the trumpets pretending that london is a sharia ghetto, and then you have the greenies pretending like certain hateful and dangerous sects of Islam simply don't exist.

Anyway what do you mean by assimilate. Yes you should learn the customs of the country youre moving to but you need to be specific. What isnt be done you want done
