When you're listening to Tool, just remember that they're not like other bands. Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Lateralus (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Tool could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Tool is that it's easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because they're a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.

Every band named here has been good except Nirvana.

Nobody actually likes Nirvana's music. They just claim to be fans because it's what you're supposed to do.

If you think AC/DC is good and Nirvana isn't then your opinion isn't remotely worth taking seriously

AC/DC is fucking great, a legendary band with a ton of hits. Nirvana is faux-popular because the singer killed himself.

Even AC/DC admits they aren't that great

If you like them, it's in spite of that

AC/DC make more sense if you think of them as a blues band. All the songs sound the same but it's ok because it's more about the overall feel and the tasty solos.

AC/DC couldn't stay cool to everyone forever. Kids gotta do what they can to distance themselves from their parents and form their own identities and all that shit.

We all knew it'd come eventually. Still feels weird.

The 90's was a mixed bag but had goodness if you looked. All previous decades had tons of goodness.

I thought ad hominem was about an attack. I see no attack there. Just an explanation for the whole "Your stuff is old and it sucks and it's overrated!" cycle that has pretty much always existed.

AC/DC were actually pretty revolutionary for their time. All the big 70s rockers made things too big and bombastic and it started to get really generic toward the end of the decade. AC/DC took rock back to its roots. They got boring later on but they were definitely a standout band in the 70s.

Does that exist, though? From my experience, t's always old music that's being revered and praised, while today's music tends to be looked down upon.

Suppose it depends on who you ask.

It definitely exists among the youth that are looking to separate themselves from a previous generation and stake their own claim on the world. I definitely remember disliking a lot of 80s music for a long time growing up through the 90s/00s and I know people that grew up in the 80s that also found a lot of stuff from the 70s embarrassing for example. Once you're done with that stage (assuming you've gone through it) you can start to pick out gems from any era and stop being a total fucking noob.

I think what you refer to is real among the older demographic though. I think many are prone to favor content that is a part of something they can get nostalgic about. It makes sense having lived through previous decades, music ties deeply with memories of the past. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but I think some people might give some music a little bit more credit than it deserves because of how integrated it becomes with their idea of the past.

I remember disliking grunge and most alt rock when it was new. It was the hipster music of its time.

AC/DC sucks and always have. The only thing revolutionary is how they got famous in the first place. You want bombastic rock and roll from the 70s? Slade shits all over AC/DC all day long.
